How do we protect ourselves? ie, to not get banned when they hit abuse?
Would us hitting abuse do anything? I’ve never used it myself

Protect yourself like an adult does when a kid throws a tantrum. If they keep posting so what? We are the winners, our guy is winning. Why let it bother us. Just skip the post and post to the Trump supporters. It is not hard. If we cannot control ourselves then tell them bless your heart and move on. We sound like babies crying about trolls. We need to stay focused on getting Trump elected.

You are responding to a post. Follow the rules. No attacks and just the truth.
Pick just one. Post a picture of Trump and his family as a response. We may have to scroll down the posts, but it will be effective.
Further, check out the posting history of the trolls. You will see them pooping in other threads. The main culprit tonight was doing that everywhere at a very rapid pace.

DAMNED IF I KNOW; SORRY. :-(

Yes, the abuse button does work. Be scrupulous in following the rules, and expect the same. I have no reluctance whatsoever to turn people in for cretinous behavior. I’ve turned myself in a couple times.
It is our reponsibility to keep the threads civil. Not interested in seeing FR become a smarmy site like Lucianne, but some level of civility is necessary.
Once a particular poster pulls enough shenanigans, the boss will zot them.
