The “trick” with being out of touch is to not answer the phone. Just because it rings, doesn’t mean it has to be answered. this is a discipline in which I constantly re-train myself. My boss doesn’t like it though... ;-)
People who were on call used to be considered servants. Important people had assistants to handle all the disruptions so they could focus on what was important.
Now society thinks that if you’re endlessly interrupted, whether with headlines or demands to know what you’re doing right now to trivia other people broadcast, it is a sign of productivity and status.
“”If it’s really that important, I’ll find you””
My husband has had visiting nurses since his release from the hospital a couple of weeks ago and they call to set the time for the next appointment. I can see from caller ID that a call coming in (LAND LINE) is not from our area or even close by so I don’t answer the phone. If it’s important, whoever it is can leave a message. That people can keep phone numbers from out of state when they move - sometimes 3000 miles away - does not make any sense to me. But I’m pretty old-old fashioned.
I have a flip phone or whatever they are called that stays in my purse turned off unless a storm is on its way and then I charge it for emergency use. That’s the only use it’s had - to call the power company to let them know our power is out!!! I can walk, I can grocery shop, I can shop at the mall, I can go to the doctor, I can visit neighbors, I can drive WITHOUT a cell phone! Miraculous!
Amazing to me is sitting in a doctor’s waiting room and people speaking A FOREIGN LANGUAGE think nothing of TALKING LOUDLY and I mean LOUDLY on their phones. I guess their thinking is that no one there understands their language so it doesn’t matter how loudly they talk. I fail to understand that reasoning. Even dirty looks don’t get through to them!
I’ve been made fun of for having a dumb phone. But no one tries to steal it, and it can’t run an app to steal my data.
When people give up stuff, they become really sanctimonious about it.
Or be used as a tracking or listening device. All software phones are potential bugging and tracking devices.
But then they couldn’t write articles for their blogs about what pioneers they are.
Although I text a bit...
Well, I can but it's annoying. A three minute conversation takes ten minutes to text back and forth.

I will accept a text from my wife or friend and answer back with whatever info is requested.
But as soon as a second text comes in...I'm dialing their number. Any further texting is counter-productive and annoying. Say what you've got to say, ask your question, etc. by voice. It's so much more efficient.
Texting annoys me and has had some serious effects on our society as a whole. Just the opinion of an old, curmudgeonly Luddite.
LOL
I concur.
But why $50 bucks a month to carry a phone around and not answer it? My way is cheaper, and has less crap in my pockets.
