‘It’s Complicated’: Bigamist Is Caught Out When Wife Sees His New Wedding on Facebook

A bigamist should have paid more attention to his privacy settings – after he was caught out when his wife saw pictures of his new wedding on Facebook.

Property developer Andrew McLeod-Baikie, 52, was seen happily smiling in the wedding snaps with his new wife Helen.

First wife Susan, 51, called in police after being shocked at seeing her husband wed to another woman.

Prosecutor Sian Vaughan said: ‘The first wife was informed by a friend that she had seen pictures of the wedding of the defendant and another female.

‘He informed her he had divorced her online two years previously.’

A court heard father-of-four McLeod-Baikie told police he paid £600 for an online divorce from Susan four years ago.

But the divorce wasn’t official before he remarried to his second wife Helen, 48 – and he was arrested by police when his first wife told them: ‘He’s still officially married to me.’

Mark Layton, defending, said McLeod-Baikie had paid £600 to get a divorce online a year after parting from his first wife in 2011.

He said: ‘He presented the paperwork to the vicar who married them. It was quite a large function, and he was not secretive about it. ‘He should have paid more attention to the paperwork.’

Magistrates at Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, fined him £400 and ordered him to pay £400 in costs.

You can get divorces online without knowledge of the spouse?

Or did I read that wrong?

That was probably it. He didn’t bother to find out if he was really divorced. The first wife has a claim to everything until he marries again. Remarriage breaks that claim.
