Science students get that particular fact about kilograms hammered into their heads. The metric unit of weight (force) is the Newton; the imperial/English unit of mass is the slug, which is 32.17 lbs on the Earth’s surface.

While familiar with the slug, in engineering school we dealt with, and were always careful to specify which we were using, lbf and lbm, the pound force and pound mass. The former being the force generated by the latter in an Earth-standard gravitational field.
