Comedian Bob Elliott passed away yesterday at the age of 92.
Elliott is best known for his collaboration with Ray Goulding. The team of Bob & Ray met here in Boston in the 1940's as disc jockeys for competing stations. Their comedy act began to catch on when they did broadcast in rain delays during Red Sox games. Over the next four decades, Bob & Ray were a fixture on radio and TV and even on Broadway. Sadly, Goulding passed away in 1990.
However, Elliott carried on often performing with his son Chris Elliott most notably on the FOX TV show Get a Life.

Classic.
Chris Elliot’s father.
Hilarious routines.
Dad would listen to them. Not in Boston but NYC so I suppose they were syndicated. I also remember them as the the cartoon voices of Bert and Harry Piels for the Piels beer tv commercials.
I guess talent skips a generation.
I don’t think they were syndicated. They had a NYC news show interspersed with their brilliant comedy routines spoofing radio. I worked at WOR at the time. My oldest chum was their engineer and producer.
I am big Bob and RAy fan, and I’m extremely sorry to hear this.
But somewhere, I know the two of them are amusing people with the Komodo Dragon, the Slow Talkers of America, the Ambiguous Sign Company, all their old radio parodies, and the rest.
In honor of Bob and Ray, the end of one of their old radio parodies:
“’one Fella’s Family’ is produced by T. Wilson Messi. This is a Messi production.”
And Amanda Elliott’s grandfather. The family business.
The mail order submarine that dad and son put together in the bathtub is one of my favorites. RIP Bob.
Bob was still alive?!
For several years, Bob and Ray did the afternoon show on WOR 710, from 3-7. I would listen to them when I got home. Funny!
During that period, they also had a Broadway show, “Bob and Ray: The Two and Only”. So many of their classics. I saw it with my Dad.
They did the Slow....Talkers...of....America sketch just before the intermission.
“Let....me....tell....you....the....cre-do....of....the....S....T....O....A.”
(Drop curtain — 15 minute intermission.)
(Curtain rises)
“And....that....about....wraps....up....the....cre-do....of....the....S....T....O....A.”
Oh my goodness, how they made me laugh. They would push a dull topic to even far duller to the point it became so silly.
Perhaps my favorite bit of theirs was.....the....slow.........um...talkers...........of.....America.
Weren’t they the ones that came up with ‘Toast on a Stick’?
Bob and Ray were one (two?) of my all-time comedy favorites and comedic influences. They always made me laugh!
I lol just at your mention of some of their routines!
I was wrong. That was Larry “Bud” Melman.
Bob and Ray had recurring roles as newscasters that spoofed Chet Huntley, Walter Cronkite, and others.
It's a rare find, but worth a watch when it comes on.
Write if you get work,
and hang by your thumbs.

That “Messi production” line always makes me laugh.
I laugh again just reading it again!
