Campaigning in Iowa last week, Donald Trump told voters, the "only way" to bring down tuition rates to affordable levels was through "some governmental program. "
The Washington Examiner reports that Mr. Trump was asked what he would do to help middle and low income Americans "pay their tuition" and "afford books while they're going to school. "
Trump said the following:
"Well the only way you can do it is you have to start some governmental program and you have governmental programs right now," Trump told the moderator during the forum, which was held at a local community college.
"They go, and they work, and they take loans, and they're borrowed up, and they can't breathe, and they get through college and the worst thing is, they go through that whole process and they don't have any job," the billionaire said, referring to the majority of undergraduates enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities.
He continued,"You know the one program that the U.S. makes a whole lot of money with is student loans, and that's maybe the one program they shouldn't be making money with. "
"So we're going to have to start a program," he said. "We're going to do something very big with loans because you have to get these people going. They really feel down and out. "
Addressing the problem of mounting student debt, Mr. Trump further suggested "we're going to do refinancing for people who have loans who literally can't do anything. "

Maybe the first thing to realize is that not every little snowflake is meant to go to college.
“So we’re going to have to start a program...”
But, but, he’s for a WALL! That’s all that matters. AND he’s going to make Mexico pay for it! Hey, maybe he can make the universities pay for the students to go there and the government can then pay the universities so no one is really paying for anything. That’s the ticket!
He may have just lost me. I want less gov’t, not more. If someone wants to go to college, they need to figure out a way to pay for it. It’s not my job to send your kid to school.
As to public education in general, using property taxes to fund education makes little sense. What if you never have kids? How do property taxes figure into either the Benefits Received or Ability to Pay Principles of taxation? What about the family with 10 kids in school versus me with none. How ‘bout this: I get an educational voucher for the amount of property tax I pay. Suppose it costs $4000 to educate one child in my tax area. Further suppose I get an $8000 voucher. You, on the other hand, have 4 kids in school, but only have an $8000 voucher. You can buy my voucher for whatever the market says it’s worth. If I decide to sell it to you for $3500, you save $500 over the cost of educating your two “extra” kids. If you want, you can send your kids to a private school, but that might cost $6000 per child. Let the free market serve the educational market.
When a kid asks you to buy pencils or cookies for the "SCHOOL FUNDRAISER" tell him or her you refuse to support the RATS running their school.
How about getting the government out of the process altogether??? If kids could not get student loans so easily with the government guaranteeing them, they might think about actually studying something that could help them earn a living, instead of majoring in Womyn's Studies or the History of Basket Weaving. Also, if enrollments at these colleges started falling like a rock because students could no longer afford to attend, tuition would start coming down or the colleges would start going out of business.
What is very telling is that when discussing this issue, Trump's first instinct is to call for more government involvement, not less. As many of us have been saying over and over again, Trump is not conservative. He has no problem with government power; he just thinks it has not been managed correctly. He thinks as long as he is the one with the power, he can make it run right.
>> Put the universities and their endowments at risk and not the American people.
That’s a pretty darned good idea.
Explain to me again how Trump is a conservative?
Easy - a conservative would get the government out of the business of guaranteeing student loans, and let the banks make the determination on whether or not to loan to a student based on the likelihood that the student will be able to repay the loan.
“How about getting these colleges for once to explain their huge tuitions?”
Why do they need to explain anything? It is supply and demand. And the demand is high due to the Federal loans. I had a conversation with my sister about college rates. She said something like “Well, we had to pay $8,000, and the government gave us $16,000 so it was doable.” I didn’t have the heart to tell her deluded liberal brain that the government didn’t GIVE her anything.
Either that, or the kids figure they will have a $100k job out of college (hey - I went to college!) and get the loans paid off in a couple of years.
“What do you mean I owe $260,000? I only borrowed $150,000!?)
Tuition cost control?
Fire 70% of the administrators.
Slash all of the grievance studies courses.
(Black Studies, Women’s Studies, Gay Studies, Marxist Studies, etc.)
Quit building facilities in marble and luxury materiels.
He advocates for a government program because government isn’t big enough already. Face it. He’s all over the map. He has no foundation beyond the New York Liberalism he digested until he started pretending to be a conservative. He’s an accomplished con man.
But, but, I really wanted to a degree about the African Tetsi fly. Sniff, sniff, you hurt my feelings!! /s
My grandson was in a work-study program at a community college in Oklahoma three years ago. During the first semester he was required to work twenty hours per week for which he was paid $8/an hour. Second semester they cut his hours to five per week and his rate to $5/per hour. Said they had to do it so they could cover more people. Turns out the people they were paying out of the fund did no work but actually were brought in from Jamaica to play on the school baseball team and paid out of the work-study program.
Now we just have to figure out how to get Paul Ryan to push it thru the House.
Did he say it would be “great” program?
I guess the feds could withhold part of their foodstamp credit.
Best way to bring down college tuition cost, simply stop subsidizing and guaranteeing student loans... Can’t say its the right move overall but if colleges all know when you show up at their front door everyone can get at least $X in guaranteed student loans no matter what, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to charge one thin dime less than $X for your education. It creates an artificial floor.
This guy is a statist, who thinks government is the solution to all problems, especially if a government - private partnership (what our grandparents called fascism) is part of the deal. Flame away. Won’t elevate my trust in Mr Trump any.
I know what he said. I have no idea what he meant.
