More than 1 million low-income residents in 21 states could soon lose their government food stamps if they fail to meet work requirements that began kicking in this month.
The rule change in the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program was triggered by the improving economy - specifically, falling unemployment. But it is raising concerns among the poor, social service providers and food pantry workers, who fear an influx of hungry people.
Recent experience in other states indicates that most of those affected will probably not meet the work requirements and will be cut off from food stamps. ...

No shite!
Just lost my job (engineer) last week, but I’m one of those “white privileged” types so never mind because I don’t count. By the way, where’s all of my free Sh!t?! (Money, food stamps, rent, Obama phone, health care, et al?). Oh never mind. I forgot that I’m white. I don’t count.
When I moved to Texas after Katrina I was laughed out of the building when I inquired about food stamps.
Babysitting. I don't care about the ones abusing or gaming the system.
I know I'm going to get whacked for saying that, but my heart breaks for some few of them who are trying so hard and keep getting knocked down again. And some knocked up . . . .again.
Those cooked unemployment numbers are biting a large RAT voting block.
You mean they have to grow up and act responsible?

“Could”
The operative word.
you work a seasonal job in a town that shuts down during the winter, you pay for unemployment insurance, but you still have to perform job searches? that sucks, especially when nobody is hiring.
I disagree. No way a million truly lazy. They will work.
Isn't this the sort of thing that brought down that Air France jet a few years back? The flight computer basing control input on bad data?
Have the Obamites started believing their own lies this much, or is this a trick to have food riots?
And yes, I know we all want fewer folks on welfare, but the reason unemployment is falling is that fewer people have any benefits, not that there has been some huge hiring spree.
As for the improving economy, aside form cheaper gas, I'm not seeing it.
I have to work 40 hours a week to get my food. It must be wonderful to have one of those magic bits of plastic that fills up with OPM$ every month.
Until we cut or eliminate business taxes and most or all Federal regulationss, and truly bring the unemployment rate down
I had the turkey,thanks!
I think charity begins at home. When all Americans that want a job can get a job, then we can admit LEGAL aliens in a controlled manner that won’t hurt Americans or the economy. Until then, the borders of America should be closed.
If a person doesn’t have a medical problem, isn’t elderly, or doesn’t have really small children at home, then if you collect welfare or food stamps, you should give back by volunteer work or job training.
Sitting at home doing nothing and feeding off other taxpayers doesn’t cut it.
While that might help a little, it's not the real problem. You could eliminate all taxes and regulations and still wouldn't be able to compete against China with people working for $2 a day. And they still have 200 million more people working in the fields for half of that who would love to come in to a factory job.
And you wouldn't really want to eliminate all regulations. You wouldn't want to pollute America the way China has polluted their country. And a responsible buyer wouldn't buy from China until they cleaned up their act. Because they aren't just polluting their own country. They pollution goes into the air and into the oceans.
And you wouldn't want to remove workplace safety protections. When a worker is injured in China they don't complain because there are a million people waiting in line to take their job.
Companies claim they are leaving because of taxes and regulations, because none of those companies are stupid enough to say, "We're leaving to take advantage of cheap labor, but we still are going to sell into the American market."
But I will grant you that the average effective import tariff of 1% is far less than the 10%+ taxes that a domestic producer would pay in employment taxes. So we've created a built in tax incentive to off-shore.
At the very least we should raise the import tariffs to be equal to domestic producer taxes + the cost of supporting the unemployed. And that's just to equal the playing field, before providing any real protection to American industry and workers.
We pretend these people are employable and waste money on training programs.
There is a huge pool of unemployable people in our big cities. They lack the most basic job skills:
-Honesty
-Reliability
-Presentable appearance
-Good hygiene
-Basic reading and language skills
-Punctuality
-Cooperation
-Basic math skills
-Courtesy
Although I wound not want to see workers hurt or our country polluted our government has gone waaaay overboard!! This CRAP needs to stop!!!
BINGO!!!!
They should never be given money anyway for food. They should be given packages of food, toilet paper, etc. only.
Sorry to hear that.
