Losing a pet is heart-wrenching. Anyone who denies this either never had a pet or never had a heart to wrench. We had plenty of time to prepare for our girl's passing, and I mistakenly believed that this would make it easier or somehow a relief when she died. It was not easy and it definitely was not a relief. Zoey was a salty old broad to the end, and the departure of her larger-than-life presence has left us with a huge hole in our world; I can't believe how much I miss her. Of course in thinking about her constantly, (without her incessant barking to distract me from such thoughts), I realize that losing her has given me a new outlook. Zoey was a far greater teacher than I ever understood; if she were here today (and could type) these are some things she would tell us about life:

Crossing Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water, and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they each miss someone very special, someone who was left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together...

Gosh! We have lost SO MANY pets over the years that herds
of cats, dogs, mice, frogs and a turtle or two will
meet us at Rainbow Bridge - and probably many wild deer,
coyotes, bobcats, etc. who have also lived wild on our
place on the river out here!

Yes they are, our Apollo starts barking in the house moving towards the back door, gets outside, stops, looks around then continues barking at everything in general, nothing in particular! He is a wonderful snuggler though.

We lost our Beagle Buddy almost two years ago and I still look at the spot in front of the closet door in our bedroom everyday where he had his petbed. He was absolutely the most joyful dog I have ever known even after being abused and abandoned with a bad leg. Some dogs just steal a spot in your heart that never heals.
Fortunately we have our 14 Lb Chihuahua Coco to brighten our lives.
We had many different breeds over the years from childhood to now, all fun in their own special way. Our Chihauhaus are 6 years now, I think together ours might be 14 pounds!
Ours is just a big girl. Not fat but could lose a couple of pounds. She is a world class beggar and Mr GG2 is weak. :-)
Losing your dog and best friend is indeed difficult. Most people won’t do this but the best way to heal the hurt is to get another puppy.
