Irrelevant and unfair are in this case about the same: "What's your opinion on the theory of evolution?"

If your example were asked of a candidate for school board, would it be fair and relevant?

What has that question got to do with becoming a president?

Are you old enough to remember the "debate" between JFK and Nixon?

If not...let me enlighten you...it was ONLY policy stuff; NO personal questions at all and NO "gotchas".

For a school board position, the evolution question would be fair.

To ask the same question of a politician would fall into the unfair/irrelevant category, IMHO.
