Ray Price (musician)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Noble Ray Price (January 12, 1926 – December 16, 2013) was an American country music singer, songwriter, and guitarist. His wide ranging baritone has often been praised as among the best male voices of country music. Some of his well-known recordings include "Release Me", "Crazy Arms", "Heartaches by the Number", "For the Good Times", "Night Life", and "You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me". He was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1996. Price continued to record and tour well into his mid-eighties.

A workplace acquaintance of mine lived next door to Ray’s brother in Mesquite, Texas. The brother once invited my friend, Jim, and his wife out to the Price ranch to meet Ray. They had been in the ranch house talking to Ray’s mother, when Ray came driving up out of the weeds in a Cadillac. Jim said it was a thrill to meet Ray and that he’s a great guy. Jim’s wife said Jim sat there with his mouth hanging open and was too star struck to get a word out.

I met Ray Price backstage after a show he did in Toronto. He talked to me and my wife for a few minutes. A true gentleman.

In country music there are so many great singers, but Ray Price ranks at the very top with Hank and George Jones. That amazing hard driving 4/4 shuffle is a signature tempo of his early honk tonk style.

Don’t know who you are or how you know all this great stuff. But the other day you posted Marty Robbins and Otis Redding back to back. You know your stuff, and now you’re up here with Ray, too.

Wife and I had the privilege to see Price at Gruene Hall a few months before his death. His voice was as mellow as ever.
