Grand Funk Railroad

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Grand Funk Railroad (also known as Grand Funk) is an American blues rock band that was highly popular during the 1970s, touring extensively and playing to packed arenas worldwide. David Fricke of Rolling Stone magazine once said, "You cannot talk about rock in the 1970s without talking about Grand Funk Railroad!"[1][2] Known for their crowd-pleasing arena rock style, the band was well-regarded by audiences despite a relative lack of critical acclaim.[3] The band's name is a play on words of the Grand Trunk Western Railroad, a railroad line that ran through the band's home town of Flint, Michigan.

Classic Masters (Grand Funk Railroad album)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Classic Masters is a compilation album from Grand Funk Railroad. Released in 2002, it is one in a series by Capitol Records.

It was intended to replace 1991's Capitol Collectors Series compilation, although track-wise they are identical except for one song. Both albums have 15 tracks, but Classic Masters includes "Take Me" whereas Collectors Series has "Inside Looking Out". The only other difference is the order of the tracks on the disc.

Classic Masters is 24-bit remastered whereas Collectors Series is credited as being mastered from the original stereo mixes. Classic Masters should be considered the better of the two CDs sound wise, but the Collectors Series does have better liner notes.

This CD as a sampler to the recently reissued/remastered Grand Funk catalogue on Capitol.

Just learned very recently that the “sweet, sweet Connie” mentioned in “We're An American Band” was,in fact,a groupie who enthusiastically did certain “favors” for famous rockers.

Loved these guys. Such power live. We were playing in Houghton Lake or Alpena MI, when Farner’s brother, a keyboard player, came in with his drummer. They asked if they could sit in. We said ok. I wish we hadn’t. The drummer was really good and blew me off the stage. I didn’t even want to go back up.

Saw these guys on the We’re an American Band tour. They were great. Wish we had more of that music today.

Saw them recently at a concert in Denver... along with Three Dog Night. Good seats and not that expensive. My son and wife hung around at the concessions in the back because it was “too loud.”

That was one of the best concerts of all time for me.

I got to interview Chuck Negron for my book with Mark Stein (Vanilla Fudge, not Rush’s guest host). You know he got so into drugs he sold his gold records?

Bummer! Which one?

2006. Kool Concert. Wow, that was ten years ago now! Time flies.

Found a blurb about it.

Ya. Not the three. But not many bands have the original members for whatever reason.

Ditto for GFR.

Still, it was a great concert and a great Father’s Day present. :)

Interesting...

Apparently she had a run-in with Bill Clinton.

I really like I’m Your Captain. Takes me back to when I was young listening to KOMA at night.

One of the networks did a news magazine-type segment on Negron some years ago. I guess he was going through dumpsters at one point.

Saw them twice, but who else has also seen born again Christian Mark Farmer as ‘Mark Farmer and the Godrockers’?

I went to a Led Zeppelin concert at the Olympia in Deetroit in about 1972 or so. GFR was the opening act. They had EVERYBODY on their feet when the LZ stage manager shut off the power to the stage. I guess LZ didn’t want the audience to forget who the headliner was. That pissed EVERYBODY off and then LS had the gall to take 3 hours to get their shiite together and take the stage. They were terrible. LZ was a great band in the studio but that did not translate into stage presence.
