Chinese police have fined a taxi driver for endangering other motorists on the road after a video emerged of him driving while steering with a spanner.
The cabbie lost his car's steering wheel after it broke off but instead of losing time and his fare to have it towed, decided to continue driving using the tool.
Reports said the amateur video, which has been set to dramatic music, was shot by a passenger who was in the vehicle when the steering wheel suddenly came loose and fell off.
The car was driving in Yinchuan, capital of north-west China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and the driver was said to use the spanner to expertly manoeuvre his vehicle through the traffic.
Local police tracked down the cabbie and fined him 250 RMB, or £25, for dangerous driving and docked three points from his licence.
Authorities told him that he should have stopped his car immediately and called for a tow truck.
However, the cabbie said he wanted to save money and drive to the repair shop himself.

I’ve spent time in China and have spoken to Chinese cabbies. I understand their need to economize...
Nearly all are decent guys, just wanting to make a living. I once accidentally left my camera in a Chinese cab in Shanghai, and remembering where he dropped the foreigner, the guy brought it back to me the next day.
They usually operate in tandem, because the rental fees on the taxi and licenses mean it needs to be driven 24 hours a day to make it pay. So often they drive 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. I swear some guys live in their taxis (it smells like it too....) They have to wait at airports and train stations for up to 4 hours to get a fare. Then they have to deal with corrupt traffic cops....

A friend of mine had his shifter break off (3-on-the-tree), and he used a cow horn stuck onto the stub of the shifter.
It worked fine, but looked a little strange.
Definite approved fix using vice grips..is there nothing this tool can’t do?
This tool was used by the Robbie Gordon teammate who finished the race with a pair of vise grips in the Dakar race this year. lol
ENVY!!! My next trip to the flea market I will seek and find needle nose vise. I used to own one but its gone now. I have many needle nose pliers.

I had to do that as well when the splines on the aluminum adapter for my go-faster 3-spoke steering wheel stripped. And the car was manual steering...
Not bad. I had something similar, actually a lot worse happen a couple of years ago in my ‘98 Durango. It needed a front end alignment and not having a lot of time I took it to a chain shop a few blocks away.
Before they told me they couldn’t do it somebody put it on the rack and started undoing things including a bolt in a shaft that connects the steering column to the steering box under the hood.
Then they called me and said they wanted to do more work and couldn’t continue unless I gave to OK. Since I had just done the work they claimed needed to be done I said forget it and picked it up.
That night I drove to work and left at 5 the next morning. It was a miserable, cold rain/sleet/snow Pittsburgh January day. Pulling out of the work lot and onto an industrial park road I heard a “PING”, the steering wheel started spinning freely and the truck started weaving.
I “steered” as best I could with the throttle and brake to get to the side of the road. When I opened the door I heard another noise, the bolt I mentioned hadn’t been tightened properly, had come loose and now I kicked it out the door into the slush and in the dark.
I walked back to work, went to my locker and found a steel fork I had on hand for when I took lunch. Snapped the head off, stuck it through where the bolt had been, bent it and made it home.
Should have sued the garage chain but I was just glad to make it home and out a proper bolt in before mrs p6 needed the truck.
Later I had a trusted ship check everything to make sure it was all OK.

So do I. There are more vise grip designs than people realize. I even have one shaped like a large C clamp. I used to work in a steel fabrication shop where they were the first thing you grabbed to hold pieces together to weld.
Now I think it, I even have one with a chain strap so I can clamp onto round steel pipe!
