Vanity: Google Chrome stopped working for me today.
right here in front of me. ^ | 01/15/2016 | Attntion Surplus Disorder

Chrome simply stopped working for me today. Rebooted three times, it simply will not load. IE is fine but I dislike it and I want to avoid the hundreds of vulnerabilities. Changed firewall security settings (don't like that either) and reloaded Chrome. Nada.

Anyone else?

I was ‘stuck’ on old v12, for years, and when I finally learned how to use the new engined versions, I was ecstatic. It’s so fast, small and stable. I also have Pale Moon on the computer as a back-up.

Opera looks pretty good, thank you! Fast. I downloaded & installed it. Of course I have not run it around the track yet. I am actually nothing of a power user but I often have lots of windows open.....like 20? And Excel and some trading platforms.

The FlashCrash thing with Chrome has been getting a little more common of late, not overly irritating, just slightly irritating. But I know it is a very long-running issue. And they apparently can’t fix it. So we’ll see. I’ll have to adjust some things like basic font sizes but that’s gotta be simple and I will go scout it out. Thanks again!

Download it and try it. It should. If not, there’s an archive to get the old v12.15 which I used on XP and Win-7, but have since switched to more stable v34, with new engine.

If you’ve got 20 windows open, run Excel and other trading apps... YOU’RE A POWER USER!

Naah, I’m just being lazy shutting down unused WDOs and I take delight thinking about my carbon footprint. My idea of a “do” loop is getting up at night to take a pee and how many times I have to.

Thanks again. Opera looking good!

Thanks. I actually use Linux and it appears that 12 was the last version available. Development has stopped. Oh well, Pale Moon for most purposes is fine for me.

Linux.
Can’t help much there. It’s fascinated me, but I haven’t had the guts to try it, yet.

As limited that Chrome is compared to Firefox, if you want to use it then maybe you should run System Restore and restore your OS back to the last state it was working. How to use Restore system files and settings - Windows - Microsoft

Thanks for that link. I shall ponder. I am a little turned off by Firefox because I used it for a while and they updated it to where it would not work any more....some time ago. Twice, this happened. This might be the same phenom with Chrome...I DID notice a Zonealarm alert this morning when I fired the thing up that had not appeared previously. I am kind of liking my intial experiences (about 2 hours old now!) with Opera. Not a torture test by any means...but for now...I think I will stick with Opera.

There are few things in life more irritating than OS issues and the computer I am using (running W7) is a champ and has been great. Including Chrome...with the exception of Flash crashes which were pretty easy to recover from. Despite a lifetime of working with electronics of all kinds, I am very unambitious when it comes to futzing around with my main computer if it is generally working.

Will Opera work on the old XP computers?

It does indeed. Opera has been the browser of choice on my XP machine since around 2005.

It could be helpful to know what your specs were (OS, cpu and ram). Hold down the Windows key (left side, with flag on it) and the r key at the same time, and paste this, misinfo32, and hit enter.

You might try Palemoon, which is like Firefox 25 (vs. 43.04) and updates less i think. With Chrome and Firefox you can run extensions like Ad Block and also for Firefox, No Script. But if you want safer and more sterile browsing install the well tested MVPS HOSTS file, which simply works to "block ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and even most hijackers by blocking the connection(s) that supplies these little gems." Just download it, extract it and run the mvps.bat file. I used it for years, and as it is not a program there is no load added to your PC. But it may block more than you want. In which case just delete the host file in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC and rename HOSTS.MVP to just hosts.

If you have enough memory, you can even run Speed Up Firefox by Moving Your Cache to RAM, No RAM Disk Required

Yeeesh!! I discovered a crazy thing in Opera that might kill its utility for me. I am still kind of wondering if I am hallucinating this.

I trade stocks a lot and often take a screenshot of a chart, paste the screenshot or partial screenshot into Paint, draw an arrow that says “see this?”, recapture the annotated chart with my arrow in it, then paste that into an email and send it away.

The screenshot pgm I use is called MWSnap which is freeware and pretty popular and highly regarded. There are others.

So with Opera...at least preliminarily....I can capture the screenshot. And copy it into Paint. But I can’t capture the resulting image! And I can’t capture an image from an email and paste it into ANYTHING else. It LOOKS like it’s working...but nothing comes out of “paste”.

Still working on this. Let you know.

I use the ancient Paint Shop Pro v7, and it does what I need it to.
Have you tried Snipping Tool for screenshots, on Win-7. Might be on XP, too, don’t remember.

I see (after posting to you) that Opera has an add-on called Nimbus which I’ve dnloaded & installed and guess I will just have to learn how to use.

I’ve of course grown accustomed to using what I’ve grown accustomed to, like all of us.....

I’m just sort of surprised that MWSnap does not work right...it’s supposed to be at a primordial level and OS independent, etc;

Try saving the new image to your desktop, and re-saving it from there.

It’s funny....”copy” (eg; “copy to clipboard”) has been removed both from Chrome AND Opera/Nimbus. I find this on day 2?

From various forums: “yes, they eliminated the “save to clipboard” button with the new version”. (!)

I like the annotation features (eliminates the need to paste the screencapture into Paint, for the most part) but the loss of the clipboard is goofy.

MWSnap is a nice, little, well-rated program.
I’ve never used Nimbus, but it looks interesting.
For the few screengrabs I do, I just use SnippingTool on the Win-7 system, and PSP v7.

Unless you've got a seriesly monster box, you're choking for ram. No wonder Chrome is having problems.
