That’s called “presentism” and is a serious dysfunction used to push ideological interps of history.
Presentism is, in some academics, merely an incompetence. In most, though, it’s one of the go-to tools in revisionism.

I should have said - politically motivated ideological revisionism.
Revising history due to new true fact data isn’t a bad thing. So not all “revisionism” is evil :)
