Alan Rickman: Even Better as a Romantic Lead
The Atlantic ^ | January 14, 2016 | Megan Garber

That voice. That rumbling, grumbling growl whose vague menace is a reminder that humans are, at their core, animals. Alan Rickman’s voice—though “voice” doesn’t feel like quite enough for the instrument able to produce that singular and simmering baritone—allowed him to play, time after time, quintessential villains: the Sheriff of Nottingham, Rasputin, Elliot Marston, Hans Gruber. Those roles, after his death, may well be what Rickman is best remembered for: the “complicated villain.” The “sensual screen villain.” The villain “you couldn’t help rooting for.”

Played a wanker to the hilt in Quigley Down Under also, a very versatile actor who will be missed. At least he left an enjoyable body of work to be remembered by. RIP Mr. Rickman.

I remember him best as Elliot Marston, would-be Australian cowboy gunslinger in Quigley Down Under.
Man, he could play a nasty unlikable villain.
When did he die? Have seen nothing about it.

If you haven't seen Love Actually then you are probably a Star Wars fan or something. if not, you are missing out. High on my list of Top 10 All Time Great Movies.

This makes me sad, I could have listened to him reading the names in the phone book and been fascinated. He had ‘the voice’ and used it well. Loved his work, he was so convincing no matter what part he played. Too bad he was so very mistaken in his politics.

Sorry, but I have absolutely HATED Love Actually since I made the great mistake of watching it once. It just rubbed me the wrong way and I thought the use of the young children as similar to the porn actors was terrible. Also, the "fat" jokes about one of the female characters whom I didn't think was fat at all. She looked normal.

So, pretty sure you and I have very different Top 10 movie lists. BTW, I am a Star Wars fan AND a Star Trek fan; but, I don't think it has anything to do with not liking this film.

I had a cab driver in Kuala Lumpur tell me I looked like the guy in Die Hard.

It confused me 'cause I don't look anything like Bruce Willis.

RIP...

I was an actor once

My favorite performance of his was Dr. Lazarus in Galaxy Quest. Not only was it funny, the actors had complex parts with a lot of depth, actually playing three distinct roles. This was a complex performance and he did it perfectly.

I have seen Love Actually many times & for the life of me don’t get the child actors/porn connection. I’m lost, help. I adored him in Sense & Sensibility too.

Alan Rickman made any role better. He was truly a personality as well as a great actor.

We’ve had a loss in the cinema world.

I’m going to Netflix to rent some of his old movies.

Love, Actually was not to everyone’s liking and a few characters could have been cut to the film’s advantage but I loved it.

And, amazingly enough, my husband loved it because he didn’t like anything.

I don’t want to hear about his politics.

At least he didn’t go public spouting liberal rhetoric...I can put up with what an actor thinks about issues if he doesn’t try to influence others.

I’ll miss the guy.

Well, when you steal $600, you can just disappear. When you steal 600 million, they will find you, unless they think you’re already dead.

He hates his character, but spends the entire movie in makeup.

Yep, it’s a great character. Remember in the beginning, he says to Tim Allen “There’s nothing you can say to me to get me to go on that stage!”

Tim just whispers “the show must go on” and he caves :)
