Over at Conservative Review today they have an in-depth piece looking at Trump's questionable political history, from his positions on everything from immigration to Syria to even support for Mitch McConnell.
Here's an example:
On September 8, 2015, Trump said the following about the Syrian refugees: "I hate the concept of it, but on a humanitarian basis of what's happening, you have to." Just a day later he partially reversed course:
I think we should help, but I think we should be very careful because frankly, we have very big problems. We're not gonna have a country if we don't start getting smart.
Then he went on to promote a ban on Muslim immigration. This proposal set off an imbroglio within the political world that completely washed away the fact that Trump's first thoughts were to follow the groupthink.
Conservatives need to know if Donald Trump is really the man who will put Americans first and demolish the "dummies" in Washington or if his lack of a coherent philosophy will lead him to reflexively parrot the very politically correct talking points he so vehemently assails and yet has so often adopted. Is Trump who we think he is on immigration or is he pragmatically trying to tap into a frustration to win the primary with a plan to revert to his original talking points after winning?
Indeed we covered that both here and here, where Trump literally switched positions one day apart. I think that's what we call pandering.
And this is just one example.
Considering how Trump has switched positions during this very campaign on important issues (like Syria or Cruz eligibility, etc), which version of Trump will he be when he gets to Washington and decides he wants to get stuff done? Who or what will he support in the name of 'doing business' to get legislation through? Will he be as tough as he is now or will he turn into much more of a compromiser in the name of âdoing businessâ?
I really think that's an open question, especially based on his past 'business' relationships.
You can keep twisting it however you like.
You can’t get past the fact Trump is out there selling his vision for America to Americans.
Cruz is being hired to produce his donor’s vision for America without being seen by Americans.
I am a very strong Christian, not that has anything to do with this discussion. As far as conservative is concerned, I am strongly wondering what is a conservative, shown some of the so called conservatives here. I’m coming to the conclusion that I am an independent, strong minded right winger who possibly won’t care to remain a “conservative” given some of the examples here. I see exactly the same behavior as one encounters with liberals. No thought outside the box. I think for myself.
It is stunning how many FReepers, purportedly conservative FReepers, have chosen to believe what they want to believe -- as opposed to giving due consideration to some relevant (and contrary) facts.
Given a dyed-in-the-wool conservative candidate fully capable of winning the general election, they choose to believe a candidate with what are admittedly questionable conservative credentials. Worse, they choose to throw mud at the conservative candidate.
Maybe we really are distracted by shiny things...
I have no conspiracy theories. I base my position on knowledge of Trump’s world. What do you base your theories on, hit pieces you love to post, garnered from establishment and left wing sources, or your limited exposure to the REAL world?
You can keep twisting it however you like.

.........................................................
That is putting it very astutely. Well done!
And you think WE have questionable beliefs?
Where have you been for the past twenty election cycles?
Trump is a progressive;
....................................................
You and your type have to put a label on everything because you cannot discern the difference in positions without having someone label it for you. I was taught to THINK. Something that has gone out of fashion these days. What is a Progressive? Sometimes, certain things that fall under a label are not all bad. Take the women’s right to vote, for example. That was PROGRESSIVE!!! oh horrors..............horrors....progressive??????????????
No, you keep making things up.
The fact is Cruz's 40 million dollar superPAC is run by anti-illegal immigration conservative David Barton. Barton brings in like minded folks.
Add to that Cruz has the biggest number of small donors, and they are patriots.
You canât get past the fact Trump is out there selling his vision for America to Americans.
Amnesty, affirmative action, Universal Healthcare, Big Government Bailouts and spending, That's part of what he's selling and I'm not buying it.
Trump’s a builder, so he understands: Before you can renovate, you have to demolish. The Uniparty is rotted and needs to feel the sledgehammer. That’s the process I’m looking forward to. With barrels of popcorn.
I know people who know him personally and do not believe that he is a serious candidate, at this point in time.
That seems generous. I think he is a BOR type demagogue, who will make the elite leftists happy. Imagine who Trump would appoint to his cabinet. Worse yet, imagine who he would appoint to the SCOTUS.
You are not listening. The guy tells you everyday what his plan is and has put out numerous policy papers. Its all good.
Rush is a Cruz supporter, as am I.
Rush has yet to endorse and likely won’t. He doesn’t want to lose half of his audience. But he is calling things as he sees it.
There we go---open defense of progressivism on Free Republic. We'll add that to the list of liberal positions espoused by Trump supporters.
Like I said earlier, everything I see here proves I did the right thing when I chose Cruz and rejected Trump.
Well, let me say that I pre-date the Reagan administration -- which serves as proof positive that a "dyed-in-the-wool conservative" can win election to the presidency.
I am a bit curious. What is it that Trump will do as President that scares you?
Honest question.
Not eligible.
You thought dead wrong.
Trump doesn’t scare me. He disgusts me. He’s a lifelong liberal sleaze and a liar. He changes his positions like he changes his ties.
