Can Massachusetts Kill DraftKings?
Daily Beast ^ | January 13, 2016 | Robert Silverman

Representatives from DraftKings and the Fantasy Sports Trade Association attended a public hearing in Boston on Tuesday to debate proposed regulations aimed at ending “unfair and deceptive acts and practices that may arise in the gaming process.” While the daily fantasy sports (DFS) companies have previously expressed a willingness to work with legislators and law enforcement officials to create industry-wide regulation, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey's regulations might prove seriously damaging to their bottom line, especially if they end up being replicated in other states.

The way these Daily Fantasy Sports sites are set up is like filing a tank of sharks with millions of bait fish. Am I correct in noticing the DFS ads have disappeared from TV?

You are correct, on everything.

I play Fantasy Football. Not the best at it, but I do OK - well enough so that I can talk smack around the water cooler on Tuesday morning. It's a fun diversion, without needing to invest big bucks to play.

I started playing in the Yahoo weekly league this year. It was brand new, more-or-less the same idea as Draft Kings.

The first 2-3 weeks, I cleaned up. I did pretty well, not making a fortune, but finishing in the money each week. I congratulated myself on my immense football knowledge and fantasy prowess.

Then, the sharks showed up. People who'd enter 100's of times per contest and 1000's of times overall, and play all the best permutations simultaneously.

After that happened, I lost. Every week. Fortunately, it wasn't anything more than lunch money.

It was too bad, it took all the fun out the game. I might as well play the Powerball, I'd have a better chance of winning. Next year, I'm going to stick with playing penny-ante, against the guys standing around the water cooler. It'll be much more fun.

Deceptive...like telling lottery players they are funding seniors and education?

You’re right about the ads. I haven’t seen one in I’m not sure how long.

Right...

I am a minnow too. I do it for the fun. It is not a living for me .
I would wager big dollars that the owners of Draftkings and Fantasy Duel are 100% for gun control however do not want financial or player control of their industry.
I don't like big tickets moving into a game. On Adam they limit you to 100 entries into game, You can have multiple accounts so what does that prove?
DFS needs player control. No software stuffing loopholes. It's for the kids

Very Deceptive.

For instance, "Yahoo" trolled me in with "you open an account with $10, and we match it with $20"!

They did....sort of. Indeed, they added $20 to my account. However, they only allow access to it based on the amount of money I play in the league - it's doled out at 4% of what you play.

So, I played in a $1 league one week (bet a buck, basically). They "allowed access" to 4 cents of their "matching $20". In order to get the "full match" of $20, I'd need to play $500 of either my own money, or my winnings.

I said "Forget it". House rules, I suppose, and they're not in it for charity.

Meh, what the heck. As I said in an earlier post, I was only out lunch money, and I had fun for a few weeks.

Yup. When the money reaches a point where I worry about it, then it's not fun any more. A couple of bucks a week is fun. Hundreds, or Thousands, is stress-inducing! :-)

Yahoo does have a loophole where you can set up your own, small, 10- or 12- person closed weekly leagues. I didn't mess around with those that were public, mostly because they smelled like sharks trolling for minnows. :-) But, if you set up your own, and knew who was participating, it might be fun.

But then again, I've got the same thing in the office league, and it is fun. So, why mess with what works?

I do find it interesting that when the mob, sorry, state government, has its legal gambling monopoly threatened they sprint into action faster than a Marine Recon platoon.

Rape, murder, burglary, and all the rest of the real crimes are, as usual, pushed to Page Two.

The government of the Commonwealth have NEVER seen anyone having fun and/or enjoying themselves without scheming a way to put a stop to it.
