One of the problems is that Free Republic changes the characters when you post. I will use the straight apotrophe in the following line and FR will change it to a curved apostrophe when I post or preview.

Then if I quote what appears on FR it will display the garbage symbols

Each time I copy the string as displayed in the preview it gets further mangled.

That’s only a problem because the software is poorly coded. It is a truly trivial matter to parse for those characters and substitute them.
I noticed that the funny quotes seem to be missing from the posts excerpts on the main page. I wonder if this has been fixed?
