Sometimes it's better just to do a hard reboot. That is hold down the power button in upper right until everything shuts down. Wait about five minutes and then let everything start up again.

OSX is pretty stable and I can keep my system running for months on end without a reboot but eventually, something goes screwy and my only recourse is a hard power off/on.

I usually shut down my computer at the end of the day, but that’s just me. Going for long periods of time without rebooting can allow crap to build up in the system that can be detrimental.
