Wars are fought by soldiers, no soldiers no war. The Southern boys who volunteered were paid a whopping $11.00/ month to get shot at, starved and subject to every infectious disease know to mankind. I think a Yankee private made $14.00/month
After conscription was passed the stakes became about money I guess, but still the lion share on both sides were volunteers.
