My in laws have only wood heat-no furnace. It is lovely, but at this stage their sons have to have an annual woodcutting day.
Helped their boys develop grip for wrestling back in the day. My husband still enjoys splitting wood.

“Richard Louis “Dick” Proenneke (May 4, 1916 – April 20, 2003) was an amateur naturalist who lived alone for nearly thirty years in the mountains of Alaska in a log cabin he had constructed by hand near the shore of Twin Lakes. Proenneke hunted, fished, raised and gathered his own food, and also had supplies flown in occasionally. He documented his activities in journals and on film, and also recorded valuable meteorological and natural data.[1] The journals and film were later used by others to write books and produce documentaries about his time in the wilderness.”
Years ago, when my kids were still at home, we had this awesome wood stove in the house we bought. I had never used wood so it was new to me. After the first fire we lit I was absolutely sold! Never used any other heat while living there, and it heated the entire house!
The stove itself had just the opening for logs and two small side downdraft holes. We learned quickly not to put more than a couple logs in as it was designed to burn hot with few logs.
There’s nothing like the heat from a wood stove in the winter IMO. The heat is so warm and cozy....comfortable doesn’t say enough....
1 day out of 365 ain’t too bad! My oldest is just getting strong enough to do it right this year is gonna be great!
