BERN TWP., Pa. - The rush is on for gun permits in Berks County. "We actually had to turn people away a couple of times last month. We can only process so many because the Pennsylvania issue check system gets bogged down and it takes longer and longer to get a response back," Berks County Sheriff Eric Weaknecht said Tuesday. The sheriff said his office usually issues about 600 permits each month, but in December, it gave out more than 1,700, the result of President Barack Obama promising executive action in an effort to combat gun violence.
"I think a lot of people what to exercise their right. They don't want to go through more background checks or delayed process," Weaknecht said. The president announced his executive order just days before a gun show at the Leesport Farmers Market in Ontelaunee Township. It's one of the largest shows of its kind in the region.
The president's order calls for an end to the so-called 'gun show loophole,' but critics say there's no such thing in Pennsylvania. "I don't know what kind of a loophole he's talking about. Any gun dealer that's set up at a gun show, or anywhere else on his own property, has to have a background check done on any firearm sales," said Robert Horst who owns 'Firearm Solutions.' Horst said, while he disagrees with the president, he's expecting gun sales to skyrocket. "Every time he opens his mouth to say he's going to ban this or do that, gun sales spike. Tell the American people that they can't have something and they want it even more." he said.
