Cruz was a Canadian citizen
****
Does anyone know the rules for Canadian citizenship?

It seems like an acquaintance was Canadian and he said it was impossible to hold both American and Canadian citizenship.

Canada has birthright citizenship, jus solis. If you are born on Canadian soil, you are a citizen. Cruz renounced his Canadian citizenship about a year ago.

The US recognizes dual nationality. It is possible for an American to hold dual nationalities.

Canadians are allowed to take foreign citizenship while keeping their Canadian citizenship.

They are essentially the same as for the USA. Cruz was born on Canadian soil, he therefore is eligible for Canadian citizenship -- should he have chosen it when he reached his majority.

Cruz has since renounced his Canadian citizenship but, legally, that wasn't necessary.
