Your search parameter is picking up the American from "African American" Yes. An image search for "happy couple" is much less racially skewed.

Same results on Yahoo, Bing, Duck Duck Go and Good Search. Sure, because as BenLurkin pointed out, the search catches the word "American" in "African American."
White couples in America are simply called "white couples," not "white American couples." A search for "American" will miss pages that mention "white couples," but will will pick up phrases that contain "American," including "African American."
So, the racially skewed results are probably not evidence of political correctness from the search engine companies.
