Docker today announced that Ian Murdock, a member of the startup's technical staff and a former Sun and Salesforce employee known for founding the Debian Linux operating system, has passed away. He was 42. A cause of death was not provided in the blog post announcing the news. Docker declined to comment. The San Francisco Police Department did not immediately have information on Murdock's cause of death.

He can’t be reformatted and rebooted? I thought Linux was the bomb?
He tweeted: “I’m committing suicide tonight.. do not intervene...”

I’m surprised that he was so young. Personal discussion doesn’t happen much with technical e-mail lists for development and testing.
Only if he is a buddhist like George harrison.
Wow!

Silicon Valley is NOT kind to most people.
I was lucky to get out of that town without a toe tag.
One month, I worked 28 days straight and right thru Memorial Day weekend.
Six months later they canceled the project.
Raspbian is another fork.
It made me fall in love with Linux.
At least you’re used to being beast of burden to other people’s needs.

Looks like he had a problem with the police, felt his career was over, and that he had problems with African Americans (given his use of the “N word”) in his last postings.
What a waste. Debian (Ubuntu/Mint) is a great distro.
From the tweets, Mr. Murdock was detained for some reason by the SFPD. They beat him and released him. He asked if they had cameras just before getting into his car.
With that question, they followed him home and beat him some more. This led to a hospital visit, then a jail stay. Bail set at #25K, which he paid.
Makes him so angry he decides he’s going to tell the story, and then underline it by committing suicide at 42 years old. Made #1.4MM last year, and created one of the most influential branches of Linux - Debian. Debian begat Ubuntu and Raspbian.
Problem is there’s none of the promised blog posts or pictures. Just the suicide note.
This guy is a big deal in the tech world of SF. If there is any truth to this, the mayor on down is going to burn for this.
Damn, such a brilliant mind so troubled. I never realized there was an “Ian” behind Debian, he left quite a legacy.
Was this one of those, Irwin Rommel, suicides?
