Having a radio was a BIG advantage. It meant that tanks could coordinate over a wide area, and also call in air and artillery support.

Not just radios but FM radios. The Germans had clear voice communications in every tank. For them it must have been like fighting against armies of blind men.

It is interesting reading allied news articles from the invasion of France. The soldiers on the ground swore up and down that the German tanks were bigger and had better guns than the French and English tanks. In reality the opposite was true. They also swore the Germans had a lot more of them which was again, not really true.

Somewhere I read that it was fairly late in the war before they put phones on the OUTSIDE of the tank so the supporting infantry could talk to the commander - probably to direct fire at a target the guy couldn't see because he was buttoned up.
