CORONA: Stinky strategy punishes package pilferers

Corona-area residents are setting out prop packages filled with poo to prevent pilfering. They say mail thieves are getting out of control in their neighborhoods.

Fed up with thieves stealing their precious packages, Corona-area residents have banded together to teach them a smelly lesson.

"They're calling it a movement," said Michaela Roekle, who set a box of her own out a few days ago.

In a prop package with a fake address label attached, Roekle placed a special gift from her son, Braven, and dog, Midnight. It's sat on her stoop Tuesday, waiting for a crook to stop by.

Michelle, who asked to use a pseudonym out of fear of retaliation, set the effort into motion with a Facebook post last week on the page "What's Up Corona" that called community members to set out prop packages filled with any variety of doo-doo.

People responded positively, saying they too were tired of the package pirates circling their neighborhoods.

"I was just amazed at all the people who liked it and commented on it," she said.

She contracted the help of her dog, Molly, and three cats to accomplish the mission.

Michelle's Facebook post was prompted by the second round of mail thefts on her street in two years. She has lived in Corona for 16 years. "And this is happening all over Corona with packages and mail," she said. "My feeling is most people are good, most people are hardworking people and we want to give and receive whatever we deserve."

Julie, who lives in Temescal Valley just outside of Corona, said a Christmas gift intended for her nephew was stolen from her front porch in October.

Intrigued by the idea, the 20-year resident and her German Shepherd, Carly, teamed up on Dec. 16 to test the method.

Sure enough, the poo-filled package was missing the next day. "I didn't in a million years think that it would ever be taken," shes said. "I was shocked."

Though their approach may seem lighthearted, the residents say stolen mail has become an increasing nuisance in their community. Roekle said her family's mailbox has been broken into multiple times. A few weeks ago, a box of electronics left on her porch was opened and emptied.

Best regards for a Merry Christmas,

We have very little crime here. We have almost five acres, our next door neighbor has ten or twelve acres, and some have a variation, or actual farms. Imho, areas where residences are closer together are more attractive to thieves. Also, this town is very conservative with quite a number of gun owners.

1. I had a neighboring apartment dweller who would steal my newspaper from the hallway in front of my door. One Sunday, I got there first and loaded the rolled-up paper with talcum powder. Never got it stolen again.

2. In New York City, that’s how you get rid of your garbage. Put it in a bag, leave it on the sidewalk, and someone will steal it.

3. Expecting mercy from thieves doesn’t work, either. For a while, Blaupunkt car radios in BMW’s were a hot item for thieves. If you locked up your car, they’d bust out your windshield to get at the radio. After being the victim of this, one sufferer replaced the windshield and put up a note in his car that said the car had no radio in it. A would-be thief busted out his window anyway, and wrote on his note, “Get one.”

Some white-trash female thief was recently caught in the act in Wichita with a carload of other people’s packages.

There’s an old story about a guy who found a baby bobcat and raised it. When it got older, it was wild and vicious, so he and his buddies stuffed it into a suitcase and left it on a corner near a bus stop. A carload of dark-skinned gentlemen cruised by a couple of times, and then skimmed up the suitcase without even stopping. About half a block later, the car doors flew open and these same gentlemen set Olympic records exiting the area. I doubt this is true, but it’s a good story.

People born and raised in places like NYC or Boston seem like aliens to me, and I to them. Totally different life experiences. That’s one of the great things about the military. You vicariously experience the cultural divide.

My father was career USNavy. Where we lived was as different from NYC and Boston as can be imagined. I’ve never had any desire to live in a big city.

I used to do pretty much the same with the “Clinton Bucks” currency that Rush would include with his newsletter...crumple or fold’em up, sit back and watch.

A local pub I used to frequent had a sheet metal urinal. The big game was to put a dollar bill in it and catch whoever stole it. Four or five guys would take turns going in after a newcomer went in. You’re right! It didn’t take much to amuse us. That GIFF could have been made in that dive.

“There’s an old story about a guy who found a baby bobcat and raised it.”

It would be very easy to do something similar with a rattlesnake curled up in the packaging material. I wouldn’t want to be the guy digging his hands around in there.

Mailbox stealing is a giant problem.....

It's a felony....but you have to catch them.

Very BIG problem in the town I live in....according to the USPS here.
