We were all sad when one of the most popular music players ever, Winamp, was discontinued in 2014. But there are maybe some good news for all the millions of users out there who enjoyed using this media player before. Winamp's owner has a new parent company, and relaunch of the software is possible!

Vivendi Group took over the majority stake in Radionomy, the company which previously bought Winamp from AOL in early 2014. There is still no official word about that, but the involvement of the new owners could indicate to Winamp's re-launch sometime in 2016.

AOL originally planned to discontinue both Winamp and Shoutcast, but instead the company decided to sell the software to Belgian online radio service, Radionomy. The new owners initially promised that they'll keep Winamp alive, but no updates have been released since the takeover, which made most people think that Winamp era has ended for good.

As a hobbyist musician, the slowdowner plugin for winamp was a great way to learn guitar solos. Hope it makes a comeback.

For a second I thought they were talking about Vivid Entertainment.

Ya know, there are other players that use generic plugins.

I generally listen to OTR, audio books, etc., but at increased speed with WinAmp, and other players, but my cheapo Sansa player has a +/- setting that suffices.

I loved the WinAmp TV plugin that would work with an old Hauppauge TV/FM card I have.

For those of us who had to spend uncounted hours rewinding media again and again in an attempt to figure out how to play various songs that we loved and dearly wished to play, it is frustrating when we think of it and how much it would have helped us it were available back then.

I used Winamp to listen to Jim Quinn long back, haven’t heard of it in ages. Skins!

Someone needs to explain that saying, really, since I have never gotten a clear explanation as to why the WinAmp people always referenced it.

I had a WinAmp plug-in for apple devices. iTunes is such garbage!

WinAmp alone still ranks among the best media players and it's very old comparatively. The UI is fantastic, intuitive, and easy to use. Great product - I hope new owners don't change it too much!

It worked great as far as I was concerned as well. I especially loved the ‘Spectrum-Analyzer’ visualization. Did not appear to be all that accurate as a true Spectrum Analyzer but it certainly was entertaining to watch!

I'm still using Winamp 5.581 - until a couple years ago, I was still with the "classic 2.81".

Lightweight and clean...
