There is a guy named Scott Woltor that “pushes” the theory of the hooked X. He has even written a book:

I am not ready to completely support the theory but I am watching for new evidence. In any case the history as taught in school needs to be overhauled. I firmly believe the Vikings were in NA centuries before Columbus - who never actually set foot in what is now the US/Canada.
