Sadly, one of the things which happened there was that "N______ Jim" became "Jim" in Huck's eyes, and with that humanization, the reader picked up on the fact that N______s had feelings, too.

His writing always struck me as simplistic and the dialect he wrote verbatim in those editions was an annoyance and really slowed the reading
