Can’t speak directly to the P900 BUT I have used all kinds of cameras. My favorites are a pair of old Canon AE’s (film) with all the lenses. Great cameras decades ago but digital is way better for casual users, IMO.
A friend recently bought what I wanted, a Canon Rebel EOS. It’s a wonderful camera. However mrs p6 needed a new digital and one that wasn’t bulky. Got her a Nikon Coolpix S6800 compact. Fits in her purse or a pocket. I was skeptical of the pics until one day I was sitting in a chair by the double doors to our balcony.
Grabbed her camera and holding it just with my right hand pointed it at our hummingbird feeder.
Got several pretty decent pics through the glass and not adjusting anything. These pics are now zoomed much, the feeder is about 6 feet from where I was sitting.
Check a couple out at

Again not bad for a pont and shoot, through double glass and having had a few beers.
From now in the ONLY camera we will get is a Nikon. Hint, hint to mrs p6, LOL!
