I carried a 1911 then an M9 in the service.
Carried a 1911 commander for a while as a civilian but as I got older and attire for work changed, I switched to a subcompact 9mm.
Last year, the world started feeling more dangerous and I upgraded to a 10mm double stack pistol, bag carry. But in a world where the bad guys show up with rifles and today with rifles, armor and bombs, any pistol seem pretty anemic.
I'm curious what other freepers carry or are thinking about self defense in the world that Zero has given us.
another great option is the Mag Tech carbine that converts a pistol lower hand gun into a legal carbine. http://www.mechtechsys.com
That way you can use a lower Glock, M1911 or XD and use your same pistol magazines in the carbine back in your car or home. Many people buy used Police generation 3 Glocks for $200 and then the carbine for $430 so for $650 you can have a full carbine that shares mags with your hand guns.
I can find no fault in these choices. A good .22 is a great tool. I have something similar.
Amen
It’s all about ammo selection. I have some 220 grain solids that will shoot through a dear, long ways. I also have high velocity low weight hollow points that will dump twice the energy as a 9mm with similar penetration. You have to be careful with 10mm ammo selection, because of the velocity, you can overdrive some hollow point ammo leading to excessive expansion and inadequate penetration.
That’s why a 10 has never found a home in the safe. More control with a 9 also.

I took that little rifle out to an outdoor range. After five rounds I was hitting a scuba tank at 150 yards every time. Granted I put a Nikon on it, but that’s some fine accuracy from a $350 rig.
It’s in my vehicle every day. Every single day.

NAA .22 mag is always in my front pocket.
Most days I carry an LCP (7 rounds .380), but more and more I am opting for a Ruger SR-9 (18 rounds 9 mm). I keep an old Marlin Papoose .22 rifle hidden in my truck.
I have other options. May need to rethink things.
Nice. Mine is stainless with a Butler Creek folding stock decent optics and a plethora of 25 round mags. Compact, accurate and handy.
Concealed work gun is a HK in .40 cal. Not that much fun to conceal.
I was thinking along the same lines - if a shooter situation occurred, how would arriving cops know I wasn’t the bad guy?
Regardless of the color of the rifle......An AK-47 would also be a perfect trunk weapon - not black - but would certainly get a hyper-negative reaction from any cops that saw one in use......
For discussion?: .380 ACP loaded with the following rounds—Better stopping power than any .38 snub-nose revolver with these two types of rounds:
-Federal 90 gr. Hydra-shok (P380HS1 H) - the best standard-pressure .380 JHP load, period.
-Cor-Bon 90 gr. JHP - the most powerful .380 hollow point, bar none. A personal choice.
These rounds will work well in these guns: SIG/Sauer P230, Beretta 84/85, Browning BDA, CZ-83, H&K P7K3, Walther PPK and PPK/s. The Colt .380 also does well with the hot Cor-Bon JHP.
Carry being operative word. If talking about in armed conflict— think 357 magnum, which can then double the use of the same rounds in say a Marlin 1894C rifle (cowboy style)— just a thought. For “civilian” type weapons anyway.
Like the Sig lightness as you say. Per my previous post it is important what round to use in the .380 for stopping power with carry that exceeds the 38 special. Suggest:
Federal 90 gr. Hydra-shok (P380HS1 H) - the best standard-pressure .380 JHP load, period.
-Cor-Bon 90 gr. JHP - the most powerful .380 hollow point, bar none.
Your brain is your best carry weapon.
The Ruger 25 round mags run flawlessly through ours. I tossed the old Butler Creeks and replaced them.
cougar in .45
Keltec PMR 30. Its a .22 mag but that 30 round magazine is hard to beat. Louder than a you know what and an 8 inch muzzle flash. Also very lightweight.
Daily carry? Glock 19, or SIG Sauer P228 on occasion. Sometimes both. Glock 20 as well with Underwood hot loads for colder weather.
1 or 2 extra carry mags, 2 blades. Often a BUG or rover snubby Taurus or S&W .38spcl
Extra mags, happy sticks (33 rounders) in go bag. Go bag also has trauma kit (celox, tourniquet, gauze, scissors, Asherman chest seal, etc) light, whistle, utility tool, and other goodies. It’s the size of a large fanny pack or bike pack. Stays in car.
With current active shooter muzzies, nutjobs and deviants, planning on putting SBR AK Zastava in 5.56mm (takes AR mags) in vehicle with mag vest. Still zeroing in. Opened up rear sight with chainsaw file. The dumbass ATF considers the Krinkov style a “pistol” so yeah. 77 grain SSA Nosler OTM ammo will be used in 5.56mm.
for which i thank every poster here on fr. i’m picking your brains.
