Years ago, my family took a ferry from Hiroshima to a famous resort town on Shikoku. We made a brief stop at Kure, the main Japanese naval base during World War II. Modern destroyers (Ageis class, I believe) were anchored as far as the eye could see.
I later learned that Japan had undergone a major naval building program when it became clear that Clinton was tilting toward China. They could no longer trust just our navy to protect them.
