In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
(imbrue) [im BROOH]
verb
To imbrue something is to soak or drench it, especially with blood. It is not to be confused with imbue (im BYOOH), used in connection with inspiring a person with opinions or sentiments (e.g., to imbue someone with patriotism).
According to the dictionaries, it, too, can mean to "drench with blood," but this must be a rare use indeed.
The English poet John Milton (1608-1674) wrote of "Derwen stream (the River Derwen) in Lancanshire with blood of Scots imbrued."
The hands of both Macbeth and his Lady were imbrued after the slaughter of Duncan (Shakespeare's Macbeth, Act II, Scene 3).
In Pyramus and Thisbe, the play within a play in Midsummer-Night's Dream (Act V, Scene 1) Thisbe, finding Pyramus dead, moans:
Asleep, my love?
What, dead, my dove?
O pyramus, arise!
Speak, speak! Quite dumb?
Dead, dead! O tomb
Must cover thy sweet eyes...
Come, trusty sword:
Come, blade, my breast imbrue....
and, true to stage directions, stabs herself.
In Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part 2 (Act II, Scene 4), in a brawl scene, Falstaff tells Bardolph to quoit (throw) Pistol downstairs, and Pistol snatching up his sword, cries: "What! Shall we have incision? Shall we imbrue?"
Imbrue is, via Old French imbruever, from Late Latin imbioberare, based on Latin imbibere (to drink in), whereas imbue is from latin imbuere (to steep, soak).
You ever notice that there are two basic kinds of cereal?
One you can successfully spoon them all out and be left with a bowl of milk. Like Cheerios.
Then you have the kind where you have to “drain the swamp” in order to be able to spoon them out. Like Raisin Bran.
Not imbrued with punctuality this morning?
I often enjoy oyster crackers in a cup of good New England clam chowder.
It’s days like today I now work inside. It’s certainly not too much fun running a 500 yard concrete pour in 40 degree weather when you are imbrued with cold rain right down to the skivvies. Ugh.
Bummer. Shucks, Heck. Drat even.
8<) Ya done good though.
Shouldn’t that be oyster chowder? ;-)
I’ve had oyster crackers before, but prefer regular saltines. you get to crush them. Very primal.
There’s something of insane excess in looking at a bowl of salty doughy noodles and saying “what this needs is some more salty dough.”
I kind of like the oyster crackers because they retain some crunch when imbrued with chowder, and instead of manually crushing them, one can mandibularly crush them with no crumb mess.
SD, I have not hat cereal in more than 5 years, it is a diabetic’s nightmare to eat cereal for breakfast. It’s a diabetic shake, eggs or yogurt for me. There are times when I miss it, but it’s not on my diet.
Imbrued with Benghazi blood......perfect.
We have all forgotten to ping, no biggie......some smart ass, or two, will remind you soon enough. ;^)
have not had cereal myself since the diet last year. I love cereal too, but like you I do either eggs or a protein shake.
I hadn’t been able to diet since my butt surgery (my butt only wanted carbs and stuff easy to pass...TMI, TMI, I know). It set me up to gain a few pounds. Dieting wasn’t working for various reasons. I finally wanted to fast one day for something, so I spent a day praying and fasting with the shakes. It went so well I did it on day two and now it is now day 23 and my pants are starting to fall down, have had to take a few pair out of my closet. Almost down a whole size. I only do this during the week, and eat two meals and a shake on the weekends. I even snack a bit at night if I want to, which is a few times a week. If I don’t overthink it, I can lose for awhile like this.
You are only having shakes during the weeks? Are they Glucerna?
Yes, Glycerna. Weekdays are two shakes one meal, weekends and holdays one shake and two meals. Cookie baking season has not begun for me yet. Most years I skip, but with my daughter coming home I plan to bake with her.
