Smart. There have been plenty of stories over the years about how the Olympics are a white elephant prestige event that never provides anywhere near positive returns on the investment.
Not to mention the need to bribe the IOC with hookers ...
Probably no money left since what they have is going to take care of refugees.
Hamburg? Might as well have the Olympics in Raqqa because that is what Germany will be in 2024
Oh gosh yes.
In regards to the IOC and the hookers, no wonder Rio got next year’s games.
The committee claims it will cost $8 billion to hosts the games. Given past experience the real costs would have been double or triple that.
As a bonus Greece's economy could use the tourism boost.
If the Olympics are held in one single place, then the opportunities for corrupt officials from African states and banana republics is hugely minimized.
Those organizers need the vote from Togo just as much as they need the vote from Great Britain. Everybody knows how they get it. Bribery.
Just hold it in one place.
Why is that a terrible idea? Build all of the infrastructure in one go and update it as needed for far less.
The whimsical side of me calls for the erecting of obstacle courses in the path of the invaders, I mean, refugees. Just imagine, the long jump [over a trench full of pig guts], the electric fence pole vault [100,000 volts], mud wrestling [in quicksand], relay races across the 100 yard target shooting event. Fun for the whole family, and think of the ticket revenues! ;)
A yes answer might have been easier to come by if the Big Government German officials hadn’t started forcing a million undercover terrorists into the country.
The German people may be kind of slow on the uptake here, but they aren’t totally stupid.
That phrase could be referring to Yeb! and the RNC.
How dare the Hoi Polloi have independent thought.
Another example demonstrating the [ruling] mind set of "officials".
Agreed.
They actually let the residents have a vote?
Doesn’t sound like the EU way...:^)
Yeah, always amazed me how people fell for the economic development claims when all the Olympics do is provide a week of full hotels and restaurants.
All of the infrastructure construction costs just come out of the pockets of the residents anyway. Looks as if more and more cities are getting that through their heads.
Only “officials” would be in shocked that citizens are not interested in hosting the nightmare that is the Olympics in their city.
Who needs the over budget expense
traffic
garbage
crowded streets
potential threats
and abandoned buildings/small cities when the Olympics leaves?
You got that right!
It will be interesting how next summer’s olympics in Rio are going to go.
Good idea re: Greece; though I can’t see why each continent cannot have ONE local, whomever wishes to compete pays for building/upkeep (the U.S., of course, would REQUIRE voluntary contributions...I see no authority for taxpayer $$).
Least then, there’s a limited, rotating host site. Not sure how that’d work out for the Winter Olympics though...
I’ll gladly volunteer for the bacon eating event!
Greece has too many troubles. I think they should be permanently held at either Bikini or Eniwetok Atolls.
