The wolf scare was probably and most likely a large coyote, there aren’t any wolves down that far south as far as I know.

You may be right. Just going by reportings by neighbors, and city sources. We do get coyotes, there's a report in our local news of two coyotes last night just around the corner from our house. There have been rare occurrences of Oregon wolves in California, sometimes cavorting with coyotes (very rare), but people may be confused when they encounter a coyote. A wolf is huge. Anyway, coyotes on our block last night is a concern to us because of our cats.

Here in the Washington DC area we have what have become to be called Eastern Coyotes, about fifty pounds heavier than the scrawny western type.

They have been spotted in downtown DC and the suburbs in MD, having the run of Rock Creek Park, which essentially bisects DC along a N-S axis.

After repeated reports of sightings a local police chief went public denying such creatures existed. Several weeks later he recanted after spotting several in the vicinity of his home.
