I just turned it back up and resaved the config. We’ll see if it happens again. None of the other settings got touched.

I would think I somehow did it inadvertently but you have to do several to screw with the fans. Switch the window to ‘Professional” mode, click ‘manual’ move the slider, hit apply and then save. Not a ‘oops!” scenario.

Strange.

Just as a side note, the cooling system with the three twirly things that go WOO! WOO! WOO! works pretty damn good. When I redid the fanspeed I cranked them to cool it down and it went form 78 to 58 in about 10 seconds.

I figure I was running fanless for probably close to 1/2 an hour and it took that long for the thing to heat up to problem range.

Kudos to Asus for a good heat sink/pipe design.
