The map size isn't the issue. It is the map DENSITY.

The size is actually small. But every little bit of the map has 4, 5, 6 explorable and interesting areas.

FO:NV, FO3, and ES-Skyrim have bigger maps, but much sparser.

The large map size of Skyrim was good for all the mods that were released. Plus, I just like a nice big world.

There were mods that introduced entire new cities.

I'm sure Bethesda will create new areas when they release their expansions.
