The Official Fallout 4 Thread
11/28./2015 | By Laz A. Mataz

Posted on 11/28/2015 7:53:03 PM PST by Lazamataz

Had to do it. Had to create the thread. The game is too damned good. This thread is reserved for hardcore gamers who play Fallout 4. Norm, KC, TADSLOS and I have hijacked so many threads discussing this game, I felt we needed our own thread.

Fallout 4 is amazing. The content is excessively large. There is so much to explore, you could replay this game 10 times and not find every mission or quest. The characters are so much better fleshed out than any other game I have played. Even the radio announcer of Diamond City Radio will have you doubling over in laughter, he's so inept at radio announcing. :) Your companions will pitch in with consistently new, sometimes insightful, and almost always area- or mission appropriate comments. I even got Piper (the hot Reporter chick) to sleep with me. It took a lot of sweet talking. But now she's in love. "Piper, how do you feel about our relationship?" Her answer: "Blue, this is as close to nirvana as I will ever find. Who knew a jaded reporter like me would find love in a wasteland?"

Fallout 4 is so graphics-intensive that I had to upgrade my video card to the GTX970 from Nividia, and I am so glad I did. 4 gigs of video memory, and a solid GPU array. Now I get 60 FPS (at the best) down to about 30 FOS (at the worst) with occasional dips to an unacceptable 24 FPS when in extremely busy, high clutter city areas with lots of combatants.

Our first topic: I want to mod the songs. I want change the Classical Radio Station to play songs I like.

I have six titles so far, that would fit in this game:

Filter's "Hey Man, Nice Shot" to be triggered during combat

Drowning Pool's "Let The Bodies Hit The Floor", also triggered during combat.

Lil Jon's "Turn Down For What"

Disturbed's "Down With The Sickness"

Metallica's "Enter Sandman"

NIN's "Every Day Is Exactly The Same"

Any other suggestions?

And while I’m thinking about it, WHY is their no “My Little Giddy-up Buttercup” pony?

I mean come on folks. REALLY? I have seen Power Armored ponies (and rightfully so!) but Buttercup IS a pony. MECHANICAL PONIES MATTER!

Oh sure, Rarity might look down her elitist and considerable nose at Buttercup, But I think Fluttershy would be more accepting. She is after all, a good conservative pony...

Another on the Music/Devin Townsend thing...

Casualties of Cool

It has been described as “Haunted Johnny Cash songs” and “Haunted Country”. Very folk-retro vibe. Atmospheric as hell. Has a very desolate feel to it that makes for a good soundtrack to exploring destroyed landscapes and ruins.

I’d rather run around as LittlePip or Calamity from Fallout: Equestria.

See now I thought you of all people would understand the plight of a batteryless mechanical pony in a blasted world.

Alas what a cruel world with such people in it ;)

Well hell I totally missed this in F3 on the Alien ship

Apparently Buttercup is something to be feared...

I bought this game based on the buzz, but I’ve got to admit I’m rather disappointed.

It’s nice to look at, but the interface seems ponderous and it does a very poor job letting the player know what interim goal he’s trying to accomplish or how to accomplish them.

I gather I’m supposed to build some sort of beacon, but I don’t know why. I’m supposed to gather materials to fix my armor, but I don’t know what to gather and how to use it.

Perhaps the actions of the NPCs are particularly innovative, but I’ve been so occupied with trying to figure out what I need to do that I haven’t really noticed.

I feel like I need an instructor to teach me the esoterica of the game before I can have any fun.

First question: Have you played Fallout 3/New Vegas or Oblivion/Skyrim? I am guessing not so lets see if I can help.

The Beth games (Bethesda) all have a common order to them that F4 simply expands on. they all follow the same basic conventions, control schemes/menus etc. at least at the core level.

This also applies to their questing/missions. We are used to Nintendo/console gameplay where you just ‘go to the castle and save the princess’ So we go with what’s on our back, swing swords till all enemies are dead and find out the princess was a questioning transexual that looked pretty hot in a skirt and heels...no wait ;)

Seriously though, The beth games are more in depth. Think of it/approach it like this:

You have a game. That game encompasses a monstrous story. Hald of the game ‘is’ living the story as fully as possible (within reason/without bogging the player down in tedious minutia. But also not spoon feeding him Nintendo style. (Not that there’s anything wrong with those games. I love them. But the Beth games arent that)

I’ll be nasic here, but there is a point to it, trust me.

OK. First, you know the general story arc so I’ll skip it. Your main goal to begin with is to find your son.

Think reductionist. Your first real mission has you with Preston getting a suit of power armor. After that, you lead the people to sanctuary. Those people will be helping you, as will others you encounter. They need things, so you provide them. Thus the story advances, you level up and in doing, get closer to your main goal.

To attract more people, they logically need to know there is a place for them to go. So you build a radio beacon in Sanctuary. There are radios all over the Commonwealth so they hear the message.

To do that, you have to learn the crafting system/use the workbench. But to use the workbench, you need materials...the random junk you find all over the place.

So you go out and collect that junk as you do various missions, or make scavenger runs on your own to get them or buy them from the merchants. Rinse/repeat. As you move around the map, you will find more people needing more things and resulting in more quests, each with their own requirements. All of which step you closer to your goal.

The thing with Beth games are that they are time sinks. Intentionally. The best thing you can do, if you want to really enjoy them, is spend a day just exploring and learning the menus/options/perk tree. There’s a lot there and at first it seems overwhelming. And it is, but it’s all logical.

OK, with all that said, you are SUPPOSED to feel overwhelmed. Thats part of the storytelling. You as a player just emerged from a 200 year Cryosleep. you are confused, watched your wife die and son be kidnapped. Your life got turned upside down, you are confused and have no idea which way to turn/what to do next.

You have to discover all that to get from A to B. Once you adopt that mindset, it’s ALL fun. Hopefully some of this makes sense.

First off, thank you. I appreciate your help.

I pretty much figured out some of the things you mention, but have no idea how to do them.

I take it the first workshop is the Red Rocket, but have no idea how to service my failing armor or where to find new power cells. Kinda sucks trudging around the world at half speed looking to see what I can stumble into.

I tried helping the guy draining the pond but figured that was actually a trap as once I was in the water I was blind and wound up drowning.

Also, why am I trying to attract people to sanctuary? Aren’t I supposed to be trying to find my kid? I thought I should be getting the lay of the land and acquiring the things I’d need to take the kid back from a hostile actor.

“I take it the first workshop is the Red Rocket, but have no idea how to service my failing armor or where to find new power cells.”

The fusion cores (’Cores” are the ones you need to power the armor) can be found on quests or bought from merchants. Sometimes they have them, sometimes not. They are expensive.

To service the armor or craft anything you need materials IN the workbench (use the ‘transfer/Trandfer all junk” choice to put it in the bench) or on your person. Park your armor in the yellow station, get out, then activate (E on PC) the station.

You will see a list of the armor you have. Click on an armor piece and you will see a list materials you need. If you have them, hit “T” to repair. If not, get thee to scavenging. ;)

The crafting system works pretty much the same way but it’s a little clunkier. You need the materials in the bench AND for some things like certain sales stands, you need to have the right perks. Most do not require any special perks though.

Rather then me reinventing the wheel, check out these youtube vids that go into some detail on crafting

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwIMM3aB5-E

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFXMuIqYigQ

If you need more specific details, just let me know.

“I tried helping the guy draining the pond but figured that was actually a trap as once I was in the water I was blind and wound up drowning.”

I haven’t done that one but later in the game you get water breathing perks. But till then, just get out of the armor whenever water is involved. I drowned a couple times falling off ships and getting stuck in debris.

“Also, why am I trying to attract people to sanctuary?”

Technically you don’t have to but by doing the settlement thing, it gives you more options. For example, they farm stuff you can convert into things you need to increase your armor and you can set up lots of water filtration, then sell the purified water. Free money.

“Aren’t I supposed to be trying to find my kid?”

Sure. But some of those people will be helping you do that.

“I thought I should be getting the lay of the land and acquiring the things I’d need to take the kid back from a hostile actor.”

You are, ultimately. Think of the phrase “no man is an island.” While you CAN do the game as a true ‘lone wanderer” it’s a LOT harder.

I noticed this as well. They did make it very hard to figure out and offered no guidance. I think they may have thought that figuring it out was part of the game.

I can help if you wish. It is worth learning how.

I haven’t gotten that far ><

I still haven’t even touched New Vegas, let alone 4.

Yes I play open world games pretty slowly, I like to get the entire experience.

This is also why I *HATED* Grand Theft Auto 5 within minutes of actual gameplay, because I was subjected to a horrific “Right-Wing Parody” of pure BullSqueeze on ‘TV’.

Siding with the NRC was an easy call for me.

Both the gladiator movie guys and the cop-bots rubbed me the wrong way from the start.

Why do you hate America and love Oba...er I mean the NCR? ;)

It’s an interesting political/social exercise to imagine the world ruled under any of them and it closely paralells our own. I think the Brotherhood actually would have the best shot at reestablishing civilized society.

The NCR, to me, is the UN of Fallout and considering how many warring factions and sheer chaos there is, I see the NCR ending up like Blue Helmets in Africa. Useless as tits on a boar.

The Legion is pretty much Islam by another name. No need to go in detail there. Slap turbans on them instead of Roman garb and you have Jihadists.

The brotherhood strikes me as some bizarre mash-up of the American Military run by Stalin-Lite. They are in no way democratic or headed toward a Republican government. But look at what they have to ‘govern’. There is realistically one way to ‘govern’ that mess. By force.

Fallout’s population are people that use mini-nukes in gang wars with no account for anything. They sell each other into slavery. Cannibalism is common enough that people openly sell human flesh.

Does any sane person think giving people like that technology will have a positive outcome? It’s basically giving liberals that destroyed their world a chance to do it again. They are in no way ready to have anything of consequence. This is why we can’t have nice things ;)

I liken it to the dark ages. Most of them couldn’t read either. Had no education. Burned witches...come to think of it, it’s just like our world today afterall.

I never even tried GTA because I hate the way Rockstar games control. I can’t deal with the feel. I do like the Vice City soundtrack though ;)

Excellent analogies. Does that mean that Mr. House is the mirror image end state of Donald Trump?

Be careful what you wish for...you just might get it, and if you see the masses beating their chests while wailing and raising their arms high to their new savior...walk away from the blast zone.

I see more Soros than Trump in House. I don’t think Trump really wants to rule the world, just his little piece of it.

Yea there’s the Rich guy with a mission thing, but I really don’t see Trump as the Mr. House type. Soros I see easily in House. Trump might see all in terms of ‘The Deal” but House, IMO sees it all as a game he wants to win and he uses people like pawns even in life or death scenarios. He would rather reign in Hell than serve in Heaven. And he has his little corner he built all for himself.

Soros does the same with his currency manipulation, illegal invasions and the like. He builds the Hell he wants to rule over.

Just had a slight freakout.

I just installed the new F4 update. After a bit of playing, it was stutter city. After a reboot, the control panel for the Radeon card popped up showing a GPU temp of 78C.

Not optimal. To put it mildly. Somehow my fan speed had been shut off totally. Dunno what happened there. I don’t see how a game upgrade would screw with fan settings.
