Tom Petty

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Earl "Tom" Petty (born October 20, 1950) is an American musician, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. He is best known as the lead singer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, but is also known as a member and co-founder of the late 1980s supergroup the Traveling Wilburys (under the pseudonyms of Charlie T. Wilbury, Jr. and Muddy Wilbury) and Mudcrutch.

He has recorded a number of hit singles with the Heartbreakers and as a solo artist, many of which remain heavily played on adult contemporary and classic rock radio. His music has been classified as rock and roll, heartland rock and even stoner rock. His music, and notably his hits, have become popular among younger generations as he continues to host sold-out shows.[2] Throughout his career, Petty has sold more than 80 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time.[3] In 2002, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

He’s one of my favs. My personalized radio station would have lots of him, plus The Eagles, Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin. Then throw in others from all sorts of genres from time to time.

The Travelling Wilburys was one of those great ideas that really didn't succeed. My favorite song is End of the Line -- catchy tune and a simple, joyful video. Petty is featured prominently. Notice the empty rocking chair and guitar in memory of Roy Orbison.

Most of the TW songs were simple ditties written in a few minutes and you see that in the lyrics.

Wish the Wilburys could have gone farther, you don’t get such assemblages every day. Looked like fun.

That’s what struck me, too — they all looked like they were having a lot of fun. Like the riffing off each other and swapping leads and vocals. It’s a refreshing video with simple focus on the musicians, unlike most music vids.

If you’ve ever listened to him host on his satellite radio channel you’ll find it hard to believe he can handle a spoon, let alone a fancy gitar.

Don’t flame, don’t flame!-—I do like his music lol.

Petty has had a long successful career. Personally I think he’s extremely talented. I saw him live in 1982. And he’s still going strong.
