Deer Mountain
Where I lived in the So. Utah boonies, there was this place the locals called deer mountain. More like a big hill, really. It was, like most of Utah, BLM land.
Anyway, it was a deer hunters paradise, from what I heard. It supported a large, healthy population of the critters, same with the mountain lions.
And it was used for cattle grazing.
Everything was going swimmingly until our northeastern superiors came for a visit.
Cattle Grazing!?! Precious us demands this cease!
They held a few meetings for the press. One was in St. George, the other in Moab, if memory serves. No farmers or ranchers were allowed to speak of course. We didn't know anything about the land, or nature, oh no!
So grazing was outlawed.
And, in the following month, guess what? The mountain lion population, to use a MSM word, skyrocketed! Proof they know what's best. That was reported.
Seasons. we had a summer, fall, winter, then a spring.
Where's the mountain lions? Where's the deer?
Most slowly starved to death.
This was not reported.
Cattle graze, deer browse. Deer cannot cut trails or open areas. Cattle can.
The cattle would clear trails & small areas by grazing which would encourage browse growth.
Without cattle the deer started to weaken and starve, which made it a bounty for the mountain lions. A one time bounty that is.
Winter comes. What deer are left are street wise and elusive.
So all those the young cubs have nothing to eat.
And they die a slow death by starvation and exposure..
Now it's not much good for anything or anyone.
Except for our all wise eastern college educated superiors. To them it's a victory, right?
