Don’t know about this case but there are many examples of dogs going up against a dangerous foe, i.e., a bear, to protect a human or going back into a fire for someone or leading rescuers to a victim.

Years ago we had a Cocker named Cody that was fiercely loyal to my wife. about 6 months later we got him a little sister that was a Shitzu Cocker mix named Noiree. One day a Huskey came onto our property and chased Noiree into my wife's arms. The huskey shifted his focus to my wife and Cody went after him with a vengeance. Cody chased the huskey off our property and then went back to check on my wife. No one trained him to do this it was just him protecting his "Mommy"
