Has anyone run numbers on the cost of producing electricity with a home unit burning Natural Gas? I mean, with Natural Gas prices so cheap, there is bound to be a point where producing your own electricity is cheaper than buying from the local utility?

Find out how much fuel the generator uses, vs how much fuel costs, vs power produced. Simple enough.

I would say though that generators at home, even IF they were economical to run, couldn't hold up well to the load of running continually.

We have an 18kw Kohler generator that runs everything in the house including AC. And we have free natural gas from a fracked well (hurray!) that was dug on our property in 2010.

But the generator requires an oil change every 100 hours, and the warranty on the motor is only good for like 5,000 hours of run time, so it's not practical to go completely off the grid.

Consumer Reports did a story where a 250 lb. propane tank would last 2-3 months I believe. I would be happy to scan the article and sent it to anyone via *.PDF. It will be early next week. Send me your email via private mail. Thank you.
