You'll get no points for style or cool, but a Subaru will get the job done at a reasonable price. My Impreza gets great mileage in the Summer, but when Winter comes, the mandated gasoline blends and seasonal operating inefficiencies drops it considerably, so they aren't always fuel misers (to be fair, most AWDs are not).

Also, depending on when/where a new Sube is assembled, the stock tires may be marginal for your specific location; "all season" tires sound better than they are.

I used to make fun of Subarus and their owners, but they are pretty useful cars.

The sporty sedans likely come with summer performance tires which are only good for wet and dry pavement. After some tire wear, they are only good for dry pavement. All seasons do make a difference, but are only recommended for a few inches of snow.
