BOISE, Idaho
The family of an Adams County rancher involved in an encounter with two sheriffâs deputies says the deputies killed him in a âcompletely unjustifiedâ shooting.
Survivors of Jack Yantis, the 62-year-old who died a week ago in the darkness on U.S. 95 north of Council, say they will pursue claims against Adams County for Yantisâ death.
Donna Yantis spent her 63rd birthday Thursday at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, where she has been recovering from a heart attack she suffered after her husband was killed.
Family members have shared with the Statesman their account of what happened last Sunday night. The account is in written statements prepared with attorneys the family hired after the incident, a video statement Donna Yantis made from her Boise hospital bed, and a draft transcript the lawyers prepared of one family memberâs account of what happened.
The Statesman also interviewed several family members, including Rowdy Paradis, a nephew of the coupleâs who said he witnessed the shootings.
âLaw enforcement should be trained to de-escalate situations,â said Rowdy Paradis. âIn this case, I stood 10 feet away and watched two deputies escalate the situation and needlessly kill a man.â
Sheriff Ryan Zollman did not respond Saturday to an emailed request for comment on the familyâs account or to a message left with a sheriffâs dispatcher.
Here is what the family says happened on Nov. 1:

As long as no cop’s ego was harmed, all is well.
I too have had serious encounters with ‘so-called ‘law enforcement’ personnel. Having been in the field of public regulations for years I say without any reservation that there are ‘bad apples’ who get badges just because they like to and can and will kick butts.
An Adams County Sheriff’s Office dispatcher called. One of the family’s bulls had just been hit by a car on the highway, and the Yantises needed to go take care of it.

I don’t think that they care what you are paying them for, or what you think they should be doing. It doesn’t matter. Your obligation is to submit to their authority.
If half of this is true, it goes a long way in answering your questions. I too wonder how Americans can do these things and not even be prosecuted. Well, perhaps this guy is a huge factor. He trains them to be trigger happy, then convinces grand juries that they were following their training.
“Here in Idaho people are pro-police enough that even when these two are found culpable at worst theyâll be fired.”
Disagree with you there. Yep, we are pro-police, however, when you find the bad apples we have a tendency to
come down harder because we respect the good ones. If the
over all attitude of his neighbors is anger, watch what the DA and the sheriff do....they’re elected officials.
Ridiculous.
We'll just have to start defunding them until their numbers are such that they stand alone in every encounter.
We can also lobby legislatures to change the laws so as to remove their Absolute Immunity, making them subject to EVERY LAW now on the books.
Thereby imprisoning them by the hundreds or more. And making them and their families constantly fearful of what tomorrow brings.
While Paradis was getting the skid loader, the deputies started shooting at the bull. At least one of them had a semiautomatic rifle, perhaps an AR-15, an adaptation of the military M16.
“They opened up with their pistols and their M16s ... before Jack got there,” Paradis said. “That’s an inhumane deal. ... This is a 2-ton Angus bull that’s pissed off, he’s hurt and psychotic. ... It was blazing down there and it sounded like World War III on this bull, because they got him charging at everyone again.”
...
“I put the (skid loaderâs) lights on him and the bull, and he lined up to shoot the bull in the back of head and put him out humanely,” Paradis said.

DEPUTIES SHOOT YANTIS
...
The rifle’s barrel was about 2 feet from the bull, and Jack Yantis’ finger was on the trigger.
“Everything was going as planned. ⦠I did not notice any conversation at all” between Jack Yantis and the deputies, Paradis said. “
...
Then the one cop turned around and grabbed his shoulder and jerked him backwards.”
The deputy came from behind, spun Yantis around and grabbed the rifle’s scope, Paradis said.
The deputy pushed Yantis. The rifle was still in Yantis’ hands, its barrel pointed at the ground. Yantis was trying to regain his footing.
Paradis said he does not know whether the rifle fired, but he thinks it might have discharged accidentally when the deputy grabbed Yantis and spun him, or when one of the deputy’s bullets PIERCED Yanti’ hand holding the rifle, hitting the GUN and damaging it.
One deputy began shooting at Yantis, then the other deputy started shooting.

The training works!
That’s not ridiculous. That’s what law enforcement has decided to do and they are supported by our politicians, particularly by the law and order Republicans.
HE HAS SUBMITTED & WAS RESPONDING TO THE ADAMS COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE!!!

This is f’ing sickening.
I tend to support LEOs because my experiences with them have been respectful and positive.
This was murder. Murder by city-boy/steroid-hero deputies who got themselves lathered up by watching a big bull dying, and wanting to get in on the blood themselves.
Scumbags. Murderous scumbags, in my view.
If they try them in little Adams County the family might actually gain a measure of justice. Transfer the case to Boise and the yuck-em-up heroes will go forth to kill again.
Trying to understand if you thought that a /sarc tag was not needed or this is how you think?
You didn’t read the story, did you? I hope you run into a couple of cops like these.
Is that sarcasm, or are you really a Nazi?
Kind'a like training catholic priests about marriage counseling
Y'can't get human stuff from a book ... y'gutt'a BE part of the program
As a school board director, I'm battling young unmarrieds without kids being hired as teachers

Finally some details about what happened and it doesn’t sound good.
