This reminds me of one of the stories from Homer Simpson's WWII posts. Two Scotsmen were stranded in France after Dunkirk, so they walked to the south, across France. Germans stopped them at the Spanish border. They only spoke in Gaelic. Eventually, a German brought out a map and pointed at Russia. They nodded vigorously, so the Germans released them, thinking they were Russians.

They made it to Lisbon and back to Scotland.

The Gibraltar monkeys (Albion Wilde mentioned them above) and WWII... there was a superstition that Gibraltar would be British as long as the monkeys (which were introduced sometime in the past centuries) remained there. The population had fallen, so they were restocked at that time.
