Dusty Baker, three-time NL Manager of the Year, hired by Nationals
The Washington Times ^ | Tuesday, November 3, 2015 | Zac Boyer

Hours after firing Matt Williams as the Washington Nationals’ manager last month, general manager Mike Rizzo said he’d prefer to have someone with “some type of managerial experience, especially at the major league level” fill that role in future seasons.

In Dusty Baker, the Nationals found a well-suited candidate.

Baker, 66, was hired to be the Nationals’ next manager on Tuesday, stepping in after Williams was fired after just two seasons.

Dusty Baker has a pretty impressive record. A 1671-1504 won-loss record, several trips to the playoffs, a World Series appearance (they lost in 7 games), three NL Manager of the Year awards. Thom Loverro of the Washington Times talked to Joey Votto and Jay Bruce and asked them what's been wrong with the Reds the last couple of years. Their answer was, "We miss Dusty Baker."

I'm looking forward to seeing what Dusty can do here.

Speaking for the Cubs you can count the Nationals from ever getting close to a pennant from here out.

This after he publicly complained there were no black managers in MLB.

Been reported that the Lerner’s offered him a very stupidly low offer and he just walked. It was so bad, he didn’t even waste his time to reply with a counter-offer.

Typical of the Lerners — always trying to spend no money on management, and only give them a two year contract . . . so they’re always looking over their shoulder.

About 4 years ago, one of their former managers quit in the middle of a winning season when the Lerners wouldn’t show their support by discussing his next year’s contract. Compare their offer to Bud Black with every other contract in the past two years for a manager with prior big league managing experience — always the lowest and the shortest term.

I can’t imagine with Dusty Baker was thinking.

I don’t think Ausmus is a bad manager. (Aside from being too quick on the draw with pitchers) The problems with the Tigers this year all seem to stem from some crappy trades at the hands of Dombrowski which probably led to his abrupt departure from Detroit.

They’re now forced to go with their second choice, Dusty Baker.

I guess they needed to save some money for Max.

Well, the Nats deny that they ever had an agreement with Black.

BTW, it wouldn’t surprise me if Black is a candidate in LA now.

Yup, one of four guys on the first foursome to have a 30 HR season. And that was in a pitcher's park (Dodger Stadium) and before steroid abuse).

REGGIE SMITH, RON CEY, STEVE GARVEY, DUSTY BAKER

Davey Lopes and Rick Monday had some pop, too. GREAT times. THAT was baseball.
