Another member of the Greatest Generation leaving and his last wish is to celebrate Halloween by giving out candy one last time.

Local news report that traffic was backed up to the interstate Saturday to visit veteran Andy Furlong ( don't you just love his name. Some 4,000 people showed up with candy and gifts for him and to celebrate him and his last wish. Just a wonderful story.

San Diego County (my home for most of my adult life) remains a conservative bastion and a strong military region, despite all the depravity & silliness ongoing around California.

My parents...and,I'll wager, the parents of *many* Freepers...were of the Depression/WWII generation.I disagree with Brokaw on just about everything *except* the title "The Greatest Generation".

About the only thing that one can criticize *some* members of that generation for is that they brought up their kids to be filthy, worthless punks.I speak,to give just one example,of the parents of BillyBob Blythe and The Former Twelfth Lady.

I was wondering how they replenished his candy? Did some of the visitors BRING candy instead of taking it?

God Bless all who contributed to bringing joy to this deserving veteran!

Warned you!

The older you get the greater the pleasure you derive from the small things and less you worry about what many consider the big things in life.

Don’t know if I can stand that. Watching this country die is like a prolonged death of a loved one.

I knew I shouldn’t go to the link. Now I’ve got to compose myself again.

My Dad has been gone for 11 years. He loved children and all that went with them. This reminds me of him if he had lived longer. I believe men like this that saw all the ugliness war could bring crave normalcy and sweetness. No bluster, nothing to prove to anyone. The worst season of the year is coming up. There has not been a Thanksgiving or Christmas the same or very festive since he has been gone. He kept us all children.

I am of the so called greatest generation as Brokaw named us. I served on Leyte and my only brother was killed on Okinawa. After the war I saw a great nation being turned into a drug infested culture by the likes of O’Leary. My own two sons have had their brushes with the first round of ‘low’ effect drugs but have been on the straight path for years. The drug culture of today is because there were many persons, young and old, who found the pleasures better than what they saw ahead in life and just kept passing such to future generations. Obama and his drug infested Chicago companions only exacerbated the the situation.

Thank you for your service. Sorry you have to see the decline of our once great nation.

Hopefully you will see it rebound.

Yes, like my Dad — WWII combat veteran and career Army officer. Always placed others before himself. Loved his children and his grandchildren. Greatest man I’ve ever known. Passed away on Christmas Eve four years ago after a very difficult time. Can’t enjoy the holiday anymore.
