[[One thing I do agree about Ross, he got people to paint, good or bad. If they were good, they eventually left the Ross style behind and proceeded to branch out in their own direction.]]
Absolutely- He DID do a good public service by encouraging people to pick up a brush- and like you said, once people began grasping the basics, which Ross taught- they branched out and left these basics behind- and searched for true art’s meaning and style etc-
Yeah, I did those drawing tests in magazines and sent them in- good times indeed-
[[You are much too critical.]]
Perhaps-
[[The shows were meant to teach, not create a masterpiece every week.]]
I realize that- but believe me, I’ve run into a great many debates where people rabidly defend him as some great painting master- And as someone who has a passion for art, I try to tell those I meet that while his paintings do grab attention, they aren’t really very good- and I try to explain why in my clumsy brutal insensitive manner I guess
[[I really donât understand why you believe that people shouldnât be allowed to try something for the fun of it.]]
Believe me, that is NOT my intent to say something like that- I would encourage people to try- and YES, even try the Bob Ross approach ‘to start with’- Bob will teach the very basics in a way that people can understand and connect with- but they aren’t going to go very far if he is as far as they go- They will produce eye catching stuff- and yep- they will have fun doing it- and I certainly would encourage folks to pursue it- it’s a lot of fun, satisfying, and you can create some ok paintings with this method- but they are just ok- I would caution them to just be aware that it’s ‘beginner art’ that they are producing (and there is NOTHING wrong with beginner art-), But I would caution them not to get accustomed to the sloppy techniques He uses- not to make it a permanent part of their style- because it’s developing bad artistic habits if they ever intend to go beyond just the basics-
[[And Bill Alexander gave you a hankering for apfelstrudel by the time he was done]]
Lol- Yep-
[[But I would caution them not to get accustomed to the sloppy techniques He uses- not to make it a permanent part of their style- because itâs developing bad artistic habits if they ever intend to go beyond just the basics-]]
UNLESS of course they want to go on and create a TV show, and paint happy little birds in happy little fields, with cheerful little clouds floating by over head- then by all means retain the style, and become rich- but you’ll have to likely takes lots of drugs, or sniff lots of turpentine to get that same kind of demeanor that made them celebrities lol
I still see them in re-runs sometimes.
I remember that show.
