)âRelax. It should bring you unbelievable pleasure to know that Bob Ross is back.
All 403 episodes of Ross' former PBS show, "The Joy of Painting," featuring his soothing, folksy voice welcoming "happy trees" and "fluffy clouds" to his canvases, began streaming Thursday at 5 p.m. ET on Twitch, the online TV platform.
That's almost 200 hours of "happy accidents," as Ross described his serendipitous brushstroke mistakes.

I lived in Boston (West Newton) for 1 miserable year in 1984. Was unemployed for 4 months of it and watched Bob Ross all the time. Great for a snooze. I also made my Mothers cheesecake recipe. A lot. Gained 10 pounds. I snapped out of it, moved and never looked back.
He just copied the style & techniques of Bill Alexander.
Is it his afro that appeals to people?
Between he and the other wielder of the “Mighty Brush” I got interested in wet on wet oil painting and still enjoy it on occasion. Will check it out.
Yes, I remember when they switched from Alexander to Ross and I was so sad. But I grew to like Ross almost as much. I guess I just prefer a hearty German-accented “Fire it in!” to Ross’s passivity. ;)
(Not that Bill wasn’t a very gentle soul himself. God bless them both!)
From WIKI:
“Ross enlisted in the United States Air Force at age 18 and went on to serve as a medical records technician. He eventually rose to the rank of master sergeant and served as the first sergeant of the U.S. Air Force Clinic at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. In Alaska, Ross first saw the snow and mountains that later became recurring themes in his artwork. He developed his quick-painting technique to create art for sale in brief daily work breaks. Having held military positions that required him to be, in his own words, “mean” and “tough”, “the guy who makes you scrub the latrine, the guy who makes you make your bed, the guy who screams at you for being late to work”, Ross decided that if he ever moved on from the military, he would never scream again.”
“he would never scream again”. There it is. : )
âFire it in!â
Lol. Remembering him saying that made me laugh.
I much prefer the excited, passionate, almost military style of Bill Alexander. Bob Ross’s Jedi Master.
Haha! me too.
"Remember, you are zee almighty creator. You say vhere der is a tree and vhere der is not!"
Both have passed away. Our local art community (BRUSH and PALETTE GALLERY, Grove, Oklahoma) was wondering if it was the use of real turpentine that did them in. I was wondering if it was the use of real flake White (white lead) paint.
Many have switched to acrylics.
Well Bill was his mentor, so naturally there was some basic similarity. However Bob streamlined the methods to make painting easier for people to learn, like using only 2 wide brushes and a knife, while Bill relied a lot on the mighty fan brush and sometimes pointed brushes. Bob took what he learned and then taught others by explaining what he was doing, while Bill just stood up and painted and never really explained why he was doing it that way. So Bob was the better teacher and that is why he became immensely popular. Also, Bill didn’t invent the wet-on-wet method, but he was probably the first to use this on a TV show.
Ya!
LoL
It wasn’t only the painting techniques. Ross stole Alexander’s words, like his “Happy” line
Can’t say for Bill, but Bob never used turpentine and he told his viewers/students to never use it.
It is impossible to make the paintings Bill and Bob made using acrylics. It can only be done using oils.
Bill would sometimes use his fingers to touch the paint, but Bob never did.
both of which are crap- never understood how either of them made it- they are fun to watch/listen to- but their artistic abilities are just a touch above amateur to be honest- Never understood why so many people went for them- perhaps because they wished they could paint, and these fellas made it look easy I guess- it’s not- as many people who bought the bob ross starter kits soon found out- I can just picture attics all across the world filled with barely used bob ross starter kits-
But again- they did have entertainment value at least- and knew how to dab in ‘eye candy’ colors and bold harsh attention grabbing shadows and such, but they certainly weren’;t pros by any stretch of the imagination
